Runaways
Malibu Stacy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said hey, we'll make it away
You grabbed my hand and we fled the chain gang
But then they chased us
They tried to waste us
You get what's to come
And become what you are
I'm glad I couldn't make it
But look what I found
Because I wasted
Because I wasted all my life
On becoming no-one

Run away don't think of me at all
You hide real good but I'm far to tall

Get you, you're special
You're moving all around
I'm glad I couldn't make it
But look what I found
Because I wasted
Because I wasted
You're coming on special
You're moving on again
I'm glad I couldn't make it
But look what I found
Because I wasted
Because I wasted all my life
On becoming no-one

Run away don't wait for me at all
You're a little minx, I'm far to tall
(Ouh ouh ouh)
Man I'm far to tall

Man I'm far to tall
Man I'm far to tall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Malibu Stacy's song "Runaways" tell a story of two people who decided to run away from some sort of oppressive situation or system, represented here as a "chain gang". The first person convinces the other to escape with them, but they end up being chased and almost caught. The chorus urges the other person to leave them behind and "run away" without looking back.

The singer then reflects on their own life and how they feel like they've become "no-one" because of all the time they've wasted. They seem almost grateful that they couldn't make it out with the other person, because they've found something worthwhile now. The second verse seems to turn towards talking about the other person directly - they're described as "special" and always moving around. The first person once again reflects on their own life, but then seems to contradict their earlier sentiment by saying they're glad for what they found despite having wasted their life. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the theme of leaving behind the singer's past mistakes and starting anew.
