Malo is a U.S. Latin-rock group.
The San Francisco-based ensemble was led by Arcelio Garcia and Jorge Santana, the brother of Latin-rock guitarist, Carlos Santana. Four of Malo's original members (Santana, Garcia, Tellez, and Bean) had previously played in a band called The Malibus. The other three founding members (Abel Zarate, Roy Murray, and Richard Spremich) had played together in a band called Naked Lunch.
Malo's 1972 top-twenty hit single, "Suavecito", was written by timbales player Richard Bean, who initially wrote it as a poem for a girl in his high school algebra class. The song was arranged for Malo by Richard Bean, bassist Pablo Tellez, and Abel Zarate. Tellez and Zarate also received co-author credits on "Suavecito". Guitarist Abel Zarate gave Malo a distinctive two-guitar sound with intricate harmony and dual solos the norm. The band featured full horn and percussion sections in the style of contemporary bands Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Some of the best musicians in the Bay Area were featured in Malo, including Forrest Buchtel, Jr., Ron Smith, Paul C Saenz, Luis Gasca, and Tom Harrell in the trumpet section. Malo's music was also hugely popular in Central and South America, especially the songs "Chevere", "Nena", "Pana", "Cafe", and "Oye Mama".
After the release of its first album, many of Malo's original band members left the group in a rift widely publicised in the media. Buchtel went on to play with Blood, Sweat and Tears, Jaco Pastorius, and Woody Herman; Harrell became one of the most lyrical trumpet soloists of all-time, working often with saxophonist Phil Woods; Abel Zarate went on to play with Latin-jazz legend Willie Bobo[/aartist], and continues to play Latin/Brazilian Global jazz in San Francisco with his group Zarate Pollace Project. Richard Bean formed the group Sapo with his brother Joe, and still tours throughout Northern California; Jorge Santana embarked on a solo career, and still plays frequently with the current Malo band, which is also still touring, featuring only two of its original members and led by Arcelio Garcia Jr., who took over the band in the late 1970s.
In 1995, Malo released a new CD, Senorita, on the GNP Crescendo records label. The title track of the CD was written by new lead singer Martin Cantu, who like previous band members also grew up in San Francisco's Mission District. Cantu went on to write "Take My Breath Away" with long-time friend Damon Bartlett, and two other songs, "More Than Friends" and "Malo Ya Yellgo", with Arcelio Garcia. Since leaving Malo in 1998, Cantu has played with his new Gospel/Christian band, L-Rey.
A vocal section of "Suavecito" was included in the refrain of Sugar Ray's 1999 hit song, "Every Morning".
MALO (Malo Garcia) is a synthwave artist who has published one full-length LP, Old Soul, in 2018. A single titled "Ask the Ashes" was released in 2019.

It's my pleasure to introduce to you
He's a friend of mine
Yes, yes I am
And he goes by the name
Justin
All the way
From Memphis, Tennessee
And he's got somethin' special for y'all tonight
He's gonna sing a song for y'all
About this girl
Come in right here?
Yeah, come on
On that sunny day
Didn't know I'd meet
Such a beautiful girl
Walking down the street
Seen those bright brown eyes
With tears coming down
She deserves a crown
But where is it now
Mamma listen
Senorita, I feel for you
You deal with things, that you don't have to
He doesn't love ya, I can tell by his charm
But you could feel this real love
If you just lay in my
Running fast in my mind
Girl don't you slow it down
If we carry on this way
This thing might leave the ground
How would you like to fly?
That's how my queen should arrive
But you still deserve the crown
Or hasn't it been found?
Mamma listen
Senorita, I feel for you
(Feel for you)
You deal with things, that you don't have to
(No, no)
He doesn't love ya, I can tell by his charm
(He don't love ya baby)
But you could feel this real love
(Feel it)
If you just lay in my
Ah, ah, arms
(Won't you lay in my)
Ah, ah, arms
(Mama lay in my)
Ah, ah, arms
(Baby won't you lay in my)
Ah, ah, arms...
When I look into your eyes
I see something that money can't buy
And I know if you give us a try
I'll work hard for you girl
And no longer will you ever have to cry
Senorita, I feel for you
You deal with things, that you don't have to
(Deal with things you don't have to)
He doesn't love ya, I can tell by his charm
(No, no)
But you could feel this real love
(Feel it)
If you just lay in my
Ah, ah, arms
(Whoa)
Ah, ah, arms
(My baby)
Ah, ah, arms
(Oh, yea)
Ah, ah, arms
When I look into your eyes
I see something that money can't buy
And I know if you give us a try
I'll work hard for you girl
You won't ever cry
Now listen
I wanna try somethin' right now
See they don't do this anymore
I'm a sing something
And I want the guys to sing wit' me
They go
"It feels like something's heating up, can I leave with you?"
And then the ladies go
"I don't know what I'm thinking bout, really leaving with you"
Guys sing
It feels like something's heating up, can I leave with you?
And ladies
I don't know what I'm thinking bout, really leaving with you
Feels good don't it, come on
It feels like something's heating up, can I leave with you?
Yea, ladies
I don't know what I'm thinking bout, really leaving with you
Show the good to me
Sing it one more time
It feels like something's heating up, can I leave with you?
Ladies
I don't know what I'm thinking bout, really leaving with you
Yea, yea
It feels like something's heating up, can I leave with you?
Ladies
I don't know what I'm thinking bout, really leaving with you
Gentlemen, good night
Ladies, good morning
That's it
The lyrics of Malo's "Senorita" tell the story of the singer falling for a girl he meets walking down the street. He sees that she is unhappy in her current situation with her partner and tries to convince her to leave him and be with him instead. He sings about the real love he can offer her and how he will work hard to make her happy so she never has to cry again. The song is ultimately a plea for the girl to give him a chance to be with her and show her what it means to be truly loved.
Through the lyrics, Malo employs imagery to further convey his message. The girl he sees on the street is described as having "bright brown eyes with tears coming down." The tears suggest that she is hurting and needs someone to care for her. Malo tells her that she "deserves a crown" and that he will work hard to make her feel like royalty. Additionally, the line "How would you like to fly? That's how my queen should arrive" creates an image of freedom and happiness. Malo is telling the girl that he can give her the life she deserves, one full of love and care.
Overall, "Senorita" is a romantic plea for love and a better life. Malo's lyrics are filled with hope and promise. He offers the girl a life she has been dreaming about, one full of real love, and pleads with her to take a chance on him.
