Eighties
Man.Machine.Industry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through crooked teeth and mouthed up ties
They spit you up river just like all those lions
That walked the banks

They said, "Paint me that river
And would you use only blues
With a brilliant big black mouth and?
Lengths of pines that route the river through
Through and through"

Fashion ballrooms of the leaves
We'd like to watch the ghosts dance

They said, "Paint me that arm
That lies directly over mountains
Where the glaciers climb so tall.
One absent of the scars passing boats and ships and oars
Tend to leave with all the sounds of the ocean."

I am but a man
But a proud, proud man
Silver bells that line the way
Through baited trails.
We'll find you there

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Man.Machine.Industry’s song Eighties are cryptic and open to interpretation. The first stanza describes a situation where someone is being talked down to and belittled by the figurative “crooked teeth” and “mouthed up ties”. The person is being compared to a lion being spit up a river, which suggests that they are being rejected or cast aside. The second stanza talks about the task given to this person to paint a river with nothing but “blues with a brilliant big black mouth” and “lengths of pines that route the river through”. This could be a metaphor for being challenged to create something beautiful, in spite of the obstacles of personal or external limitations.

The last stanza again references a task given to the person, but this time they are tasked with painting an arm “that lies directly over mountains, where the glaciers climb so tall”. The arm is absent of scars, but still bears the sounds of the ocean. This could represent a challenge to achieve something that is difficult to attain, while maintaining a sense of purity or innocence. Throughout the song, there are themes of being tested, persevering, and finding a sense of pride in oneself, even in the face of adversity.
