Nat West-Barclays-Midlands-Lloyds
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Economic forecasts soothe our
dereliction
Words of euthanasia, apathy of
sick routine
Carried away with useless
advertising dreams
Blinding children, life as
automatons

[CHORUS]
Nat West, Nat West-Barclays-
Midlands-Lloyds
Black horse apocalypse
Death sanitised through credit
Barclays iron eagle, "33
injection"
Sold to advertiser, computer
execution line
They give then take away,
repossess and crucify
The more you own the more you
are, lonelier with cheap desire

[CHORUS]
Prosperity--exports for Pol Pot
Prosperity--Mein Kampf for

beginners
[CHORUS]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the Manic Street Preachers' song Nat West-Barclays-Midlands-Lloyds reflect on the capitalist system which governs Western society. The opening lines suggest a fatalistic view of the world - people have become resigned to their own ruination and have abandoned hope in the face of economic decline. The words of "euthanasia" and "apathy" suggest that the people in this society have given up on themselves, and the "useless advertising dreams" they are bombarded with only act to reinforce their powerlessness. The third line in the opening verse, "Blinding children, life as automatons", takes aim at the media and big corporations, which manipulate people from a young age in order to render them compliant as adults. The chorus introduces the names of four major British banks: Nat West, Barclays, Midlands and Lloyds. The chorus suggests that these banks are not only symbolic of the capitalist system but are, in fact, its embodiment. The verse goes on to describe the banks as a "black horse apocalypse", suggesting that the destruction that the banks bring is not a slow or gradual process, but rather something that happens suddenly and violently.

The final verse of the song draws together the themes of fascism and capitalism, suggesting that the two are close bedfellows. "Prosperity--exports for Pol Pot / Prosperity--Mein Kampf for beginners" seems to connect the Western economic system with some of the most evil men and regimes ever to have existed. By suggesting that the consequences of our capitalist structure can be as brutal as those meted out by Pol Pot and Hitler, the song points to its dangerous ethical consequences.

The early Manics stuff was great. Call it post-punk, glam punk, whatever. It's fucking great music. Some of it IS punk played better. To me the mark of a great punk song is something powerful, and relevant to say, and in 20-30 years you look back and think "Fuck me, you were right!". This (2008 banking crisis), Another Invented Disease (covid), IFWHITEAMERICATOLDTHETRUTHFORONEDAYIT'SWORLDWOULDFALLAPART.... All of it is still relevant. Generation Terrorists through to Holy Bible deserve more recognition. Absolutely stonking albums all of them.
