The Last Time I Saw Paris
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lors de mon dernier voyage à Paris
Comme d'habitude la nausée me repris
La puanteur de l'échec autour de moi
Envahi par les spectres de l'échec

La derniere fois que j'ai vu Paris
The last time I saw Paris
J'ai dansé le tango à Paris
Mais je me sentais imposteur et fataliste
Par mon exile inexprimé
Et mes promesses vouées à être rompues

La derniere fois que j'ai vu Paris
The last time I saw Paris

Je me suis promené dans Paris
Recherchant le boxeur et le gardien de but
J'aurais voulu leur poser des questions
Mais ils étaient trop pris ces coureurs de jupons

La derniere fois que j'ai vu Paris
The last time I saw Paris

La derniere fois que j'ai vu Paris

Overall Meaning

The Manic Street Preachers’ song “The Last Time I Saw Paris” is a reflective track about the band member’s last visit to the French capital. The lyrics paint a picture of a disillusioned and disheartened traveller who is weighed down by personal disappointment and failure. The lyrics are mostly in French with the title phrase in English, which adds to the theme of cultural dislocation and incongruity.

In the opening verse of the song, the lead singer describes how he feels nauseous upon arriving in Paris – a city that has always been synonymous with glamour, romance and artistic inspiration. However, instead of basking in the beauty of the city, he feels enveloped by the stench of failure, which is personified by the “spectres of the failure” that haunt him. The next verse describes how despite the lead singer dancing the Tango in Paris, he still feels like an imposter and a fatalist. This sense of displacement is compounded by his “unexpressed exile” and the promise of unfulfilled ambitions.

The final verse sees the lead singer wandering around Paris looking for a boxer and a goalie, presumably to seek answers to his own questions about the nature of success and the pursuit of excellence. However, both these athletes are too busy with their own lives and chasing women to lend him an ear. The conclusion is a poignant reminder of how time waits for no one and how Paris, like life, keeps moving on regardless of one’s struggles and hardships.
