What's My Name
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What the hell is wrong with me?
I'm not who I want to be
I tired spot cream an' I tried it all
I'm crawling up the wall

What's my name, name, name

I tried to join a ping-pong club
Sign on the door said "all full up"
I got nicked, fighting in the road
The judge didn't even know

What's my name, name, name

Dad go pissed so I got clocked
Couldn't hear the Tannoy so he lost the lot
Offers mum a bribe through the letter box
Drives you fucking mad

Now, I'm round the back of your house at night
Peeping in the window, are you sleeping tight?
I laugh at your locks with my celluloid strip
An' you won't know who came

What's my name, name, name

What's my name, name, name

Overall Meaning

The Manic Street Preachers’ song “What’s My Name” demonstrates feeling lost and uncertain about one’s identity. The opening lyrics, “What the hell is wrong with me?//I'm not who I want to be” suggest a sense of despair and dissatisfaction with oneself. The singer has attempted to improve their appearance, but still feels inferior, “I tried spot cream and I tried it all//I'm crawling up the wall”. The repetition of the question “What’s my name?” provides a central theme to the song, with the name representing the singer’s true identity.

The singer then recounts various experiences which further contribute to their sense of disorientation. Failing to join the ping-pong club and getting arrested, “The judge didn't even know”, amplifies feelings of inadequacy. The singer’s father is presented as abusive, insulting the Tannoy operator and bribing the mother, “Offers mum a bribe through the letterbox”. The singer also demonstrates a voyeuristic tendency, with the closing lyrics “I'm round the back of your house at night//Peeping in the window, are you sleeping tight?//I laugh at your locks with my celluloid strip//An' you won't know who came” suggesting an obsession with others’ identities.

Overall, “What’s My Name” is a captivating exploration of the complexities of identity, focusing on feelings of inadequacy, displacement, and confusion.

at least put your own spin on it. this is a verbatim copy of a live clash recording

@olixbob
Verbatim how? You mean the bridge bit?
Weird, cos they sound different to me. As for the rest of the song, well them's the words.

Clash version:
"Here we are on tv
What does it mean to me?
What does it mean to you?
FUCK ALL."

Manics version:
"Here we are in Cambridge now
Are we gonna indulge in the usual cliches
Of dumb class, dumb, dumb Class War?
Yes...what about it...."

So yeah, I guess you could argue he starts
aping Strummer's lyric-change, but...whatever.
Not a patch on the Clash performance anyway, on that we probably agree.
