Estrellita
Manuel Ponce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Estrellita del lejano cielo
Que miras mi dolor
Que sabes mi sufrir
Baja y dime
Baja y dime

Little star from the distant sky
That you look at my pain
That you know my suffering
Come down and tell me
If you love me a little
Because I can't live without your love
You are a star, my beacon of love!
You know that soon I have to die
Come down and tell me

If you love me a little
Because I can't live without your love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Manuel Ponce's song "Estrellita" express a yearning for love and the pain of being separated from the beloved. The singer addresses a distant star, symbolizing a source of hope and guidance in their life. The star is personified as someone who understands the singer's pain and suffering. The singer pleads for the star to come down and reveal if they are loved even just a little, as they cannot imagine living without their love.

The song conveys a sense of vulnerability and desperation, as the singer sees the star as their only solace in a world of emotional turmoil. They believe that without the love of their beloved, life becomes unbearable. The repetition of the line "Porque yo no puedo sin su amor vivir" (Because I can't live without your love) emphasizes the depth of their love and dependency.

The imagery of the star also adds a mystical and celestial element to the lyrics, portraying the beloved as something precious and unattainable. The lyrics capture the universal theme of unrequited love and the longing for affection that transcends borders and distance.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and Ray Chen certainly does it justice. I've never heard it played more beautifully.

Agreed!

@MARTIN201199

What a beautiful encore. This is the most delightful version of this Mexican song. It was a cherished song to Heifetz, who I believe, was the first classical violinist to play it, but Ray Chen makes it more sweet, sad and enjoyable at the same time.

The first time I heard this song, I was 17 years old. It was 1967 when “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution “ violently swept China. In this world, only the artworks that truly touch the human soul will remain to tell the story of our existence, everything else , no matter how great it is, only leaves a flash, like a meteor cross the night sky.
