María Isabel grew up in a musical family while living in Queens. She always knew she wanted to make music, citing powerful women such as Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Lauryn Hill as her biggest influences.
She studied in the music program at New York University while singing for the campus' a cappella group, APC Rhythm. Only during her first year at NYU did she start writing and recording her own songs, giving her a new outlet to express her thoughts and feelings. Soon after, she began to gain popularity through her Instagram and SoundCloud, where she would publish covers in addition to her own music.
After graduation, María Isabel moved to Los Angeles to further her career. In February 2020, she released her debut single “The 1,” followed by her debut EP Stuck In The Sky in October of the same year, which is based on the painful experience of a long-distance relationship.
(2) María Isabel López Rodríguez (b. 4 January 1995), known professionally as María Isabel, is a Spanish singer and songwriter. She is best known for winning the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Antes muerta que sencilla". Winning at the age of nine years, ten months, and 16 days old, she became the youngest person to win the contest to date (a few days younger than the Tolmachevy Sisters, the only other nine-year-old winners).
Several weeks before winning the festival she released her first album, titled "¡No me toques las palmas que me conozco!". This CD included "Antes muerta que sencilla", which launched her career in the Spanish show business world, making her a competitor of another Spaniard child star, Melody.

What about the rest of me?
You aint lying next to me
Longing fills the room
And I don't know what to do
You won't even answer me
The half to my whole my personal sun
Been up for a while your day's barely begun
I'm
Wake up in a city that is not my city
U can feed me lies, just tell me u miss me
Aaaahhh
Even the moon must wanna go home
Don't you get tired of bein alone?
Aaaah... aaaah
Distance makes the heart grow fonder
What about the rest of me?
You aint lying next to me
Longing fills the room
And I don't know what to do
You won't even answer me
Aaaah
The sun melts away my heartbeat gets loud
The stars light the way to a galaxy of doubt
(A-a-ah)
Even the moon must wanna go home
Don't you get tired of watchin me go?
Aaaah
Distance makes the heart grow fonder
What about the rest of me?
You aint lying next to me
Longing fills the room
And I don't know what to do
You won't even answer me
Aaaah
Distance makes the heart grow fonder
What about the rest of me?
You aint lying next to me
Longing fills the room
And I don't know what to do
You won't even answer me
Aaaah
The lyrics of María Isabel's "Distance" is a song about the struggles of being in a long-distance relationship. The opening line, "Distance makes the heart grow fonder," is a common phrase, but the following lyrics bring up questions about the challenges of physical absence. María wonders about the rest of her body and soul, not just the heart, now that her partner is not with her. The song continues to express her longing for her partner, and how their lack of communication only adds to her distress. She wants to hear from them, and the unanswered calls and messages add to her frustration.
María Isabel also speaks to the moon, a celestial object that is also distant and alone, and speaks of the exhaustion on both ends of the relationship. She mentions that even the moon would want to go home, and questions if her partner is tired of being alone as she is. The chorus repeats that while distance may make the heart grow fonder, the rest of her being is left with a void that can't be filled by just emotions. She is left in a room filled with longing, not knowing what to do.
Overall, "Distance" is a relatable song that highlights the struggles of maintaining a long-distance relationship. It emphasizes the importance of physical connection and communication outside of just emotional connection.
