Angel de luz
Margarita Laso Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ángel de luz,
de aromas y de nieves
cruzó tus labios,
con flores de ambrosía
tus pupilas,
románticas auroras,
que en oriente serán el albo día.
Dentro tu pecho guardas
conciertos de notas
perfumes de nardos,
de flores de albor,
mi pecho en un sepulcro
de rosas marchitas,
anima esas flores
con besos de amor.

Reina de lirios,
en tus rizadas trenzas,
nido de seda,
do duermen los canelos,
deja que pose
mis glaciares labios,
que estan enfermos
por falta de tu amor.

Los labios que no besan,
son pétalos muertos,
son himnos sin notas,
son astros sin luz,
los pechos que no aman,
son noches polares,
sarcófagos tristes
do alberga el dolor.

Los labios que no besan,
son pétalos muertos,
son himnos sin notas,
son astros sin luz,
los pechos que no aman,
son noches polares,

sarcófagos tristes
do alberga el dolor.

Overall Meaning

In Ángel de Luz, Margarita Laso delves into the theme of love and the power that it holds over the human soul. The first stanza describes the singer, an Angel of Light, who crosses the lips of the beloved with the flowers of ambrosia. The use of olfactory imagery such as "aromas" and "nieves" creates a vivid picture and emphasizes the importance of smell and taste in the experience of love. The romantic auroras in the beloved's pupils, signify the dawn of a new day of hope and love. This line is particularly poignant as it draws from the image of the eastern sun, the source of light and warmth for many cultures.

Moving on to the second stanza, the singer speaks of the beauty that lies within the beloved. The "concertos of notes" and "perfumes of nardos" symbolize the beloved's inner beauty, which the Angel contrasts with the decay in their own heart, causing the flowers in his/her heart to wilt. The Angel then pleads with the beloved, declaring her to be the "Queen of lilies" with her hair being a silken nest where the "canelos" sleep, and asks permission to restore his heart by kissing her lips, which have healing powers.

The third stanza emphasizes the importance of love in life. According to the Angel, lips that do not kiss are "petals dead," and chests that do not love are "polar nights," a metaphor for darkness and emptiness. The use of the term "sarcófagos tristes" or "sad graves" further emphasizes how love brings life and light to a person, while the lack of it leads to emptiness and sadness.

Overall, Ángel de Luz is a beautiful and poignant ode to the transformative nature of love and its significance in our lives.
