Último Desejo
Maria Bethânia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
E que teve o seu começo
Numa festa de São João
Morre, hoje, sem foguete
Sem retrato, sem bilhete
Sem luar, sem violão!
Perto de você me calo
Tenho medo de chorar
Nunca mais quero teu beijo
Mas meu último desejo
Você não pode negar!
Se alguma pessoa amiga
Pedir que você lhe diga
Se você me quer ou não
Diga que você me adora
Que você lamenta e chora
A nossa separação!
Às pessoas que eu detesto
Diga sempre que eu não presto
Que meu lar é um botequim
E que eu arruinei tua vida
Que eu não mereço a comida
Que você pagou pra mim!
The lyrics of the song Último Desejo (Last Wish) by Maria Bethania speak of a love that has ended, as the singer recalls how it all began at a São João festival. The sentiment that they once shared has faded, and now their love has died without fanfare or ceremony - there are no fireworks, no photos, no notes, no moonlight, no guitars to mark its passing. Thus, the singer's last wish is to ask their former lover to grant them one final favor: to tell any mutual friends that they still hold affection for the singer, even though they will never want to kiss them again.
The second verse of the song is filled with melancholy, as the singer confesses that being close to their ex-lover makes them feel quiet and reserved, keeping all of their thoughts inside, afraid to say anything and reveal their emotions. Although they do not want to ask for a kiss again, they hope that their last wish will be granted. If anyone should inquire about the singer's feelings, they request that their former partner express their adoration, their regret, and their tears over breaking up, so that the true nature of their relationship will be known. Furthermore, Maria Bethania concludes the song by directing her former love to tell all of her enemies that she did not deserve their disdain, that her home was not a tavern, and that she did not ruin their life by accepting their generosity.
