This Bottle of Wine
Maria Mena Lyrics

I down this bottle of wine
I don't know how to feel but
I don't mind the buzz

As the night moves slow you
Look more and more like someone I could
Love tonight
Without the fuzz

And the feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again
Yeah these feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again

Don't analyze me
There's no apparent link between
The day he said he'd leave
And my

Recurring dreams
And how I just can't sleep
Unless I've had a drink or five

Oh these feelings
I don't know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again
Yeah these feelings
I don't know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again

I down this bottle of wine
I don't know how to feel but
I don't mind the buzz

As the night moves slow you
Look more and more like someone I could
Love tonight
Without the fuzz

And the feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again
Yeah these feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again

All these feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again

Yeah these feelings
I don't know know if you've been there
I don't think I can go there again

I down this bottle of wine

I don't know how to feel but
I don't mind the buzz

Overall Meaning

Maria Mena’s song “This Bottle of Wine” is a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of the inner turmoil one can feel after being heartbroken. The singer of the song is lost, unable to make sense of her emotions and numbly drinks her way through them. The opening lines of the song, “I down this bottle of wine / I don't know how to feel but / I don't mind the buzz,” set the tone for the remainder of the song. The singer is not necessarily enjoying the wine, but more so the escape it is providing them. The wine is allowing them to ignore their feelings, even if it is only temporary.

As the night progresses, the singer begins to see someone who they could love tonight without any “fuzz.” This person could be a rebound or a distraction, and the singer recognizes this but cannot help but be drawn in by the possibility of love. The refrain of the song, “These feelings / I don't know if you've been there / I don't think I can go there again,” is repeated four times throughout the song and is symbolic of the singer’s inability to confront the pain they are feeling.

The singer, towards the end of the song, acknowledges that something happened between them and someone else, “The day he said he'd leave” and that they have been unable to cope with that. They are experiencing recurring dreams, and can't sleep unless they've had a drink or five. The lyrics suggest that the singer has experienced heartbreak before and is not willing to go through that pain again.
