Mena was thirteen years old she moved to live with her musician father. She sang and wrote lyrics as a form of therapy for her feelings and frustrations. Not all the stories in her diary became songs, but "My Lullaby" was one of them, expressing her pain from her parents' divorce. After pleading with her father to make a demo, he contacted some industry experts to record Maria's songs in the studio. Then he presented his daughter's demo to the music industry. Sony Music signed Maria Mena to their label.
In March 2002, Mena's single "My Lullaby" reached number five in the Norwegian charts. The young singer quickly gained fans and soon earned her first platinum record. 2005 saw the release of Apparently Unaffected, including singles "Miss You Love" and "Just Hold Me". A significant success in Norway, the album gained three Spellemann nominations: best female artist, best hit, and best music video.
In September 2008 Mena's fifth studio album was released, Cause and Effect.

The other day,
Growing up slowly.
Have you ever heard me
Laugh so easily,
It's cos I'm growing up slowly.
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Me and my confidence,
We're now more than friends,
We're growing up slowly.
She lives in me,
She whispers when I sleep,
She says "you're growing up slowly"
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
I have let go of my daemons,
They left me when I sang the truth,
No bulges I'm finally even,
I can break all my rules.
When I was ten,
My mother changed my name,
She said "you're gonna grow into it"
It took quite some time,
But today it feels like mine.
I guess I grew slowly.
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
Oh, Viktoria
I have let go of my daemons,
They left me when I sang the truth,
No bulges I'm finally even,
I can break all my rules.
The song "Viktoria" by Maria Mena is a reflective tune about the singer's growth and development. The opening verse, "I looked away, The other day, Growing up slowly," sets the tone of the song by implying a sense of nostalgia and introspection. The chorus repeats the name Viktoria, which is likely a reference to either a person or a version of herself. The repetition adds a sense of urgency to the lyrics and shows that this growth and development is an ongoing process.
The second verse speaks of the singer's growing confidence and how it is now more than just an acquaintance. She also mentions an inner voice, possibly her intuition or subconscious, referred to as Viktoria, that guides her through this slow process of maturity. The bridge, "I have let go of my daemons, They left me when I sang the truth, No bulges I'm finally even, I can break all my rules," reflects on her ability to triumph over the obstacles that once held her back, and her newfound freedom to break free from restrictive patterns.
Finally, the last verse mentions a name change her mother gave her when she was young, implying another significant leap in her transformation. She states that while it took some time, she finally feels like she owns her name, which is a metaphor for owning her growth and identity. Overall, "Viktoria" is a heartfelt and reflective song about personal growth, motivation, and positive change.
