Say Anything
Mariana Trench Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sometimes, I don't know what you want
I can take it if you need to,
Take this out on someone
That little thing with her head held so high
Talking tough, and I
Cut myself so I could feel something I
That one stings a little,
I'm always in the middle
I don't expect, but try me,
And you will always find me here
This is where I scream from
Yeah, you can take it all and work it out, yes
There's a little bit of you in all this
You can say the only thing you know, yeah
Please, there's a better bit of me to see yet,
'Cause you haven't see any of my best
Know I hate myself without you now, yeah
Hurts to see, but nobody knows,
Guess that's just how it goes
And I, I won't say anything at all
I was taking on a dollar sign, anxious,
Scared of what you need
Everybody wants a piece of you,
Everyone takes a piece of me
That one stings a little,
I'm always in the middle
I don't expect, but try me,
And you will always find me here
This is where I scream from
Yeah, you can take it all and work it out, yes
There's a little bit of you in all this
You can say the only thing you know, yeah
oh, Please, there's a better bit of me to see yet,
'Cause you haven't see any of my best
Know I hate myself without you now, yeah
Hurts to see, but nobody knows,
Guess that's just how it goes
And I, I won't say anything at all
(I-I-I-Iiii)
This is the hook, take it like I took
I'm shaking like I shook before
And I'm a little better off
I'm not the only one
This is where I stopped before
And now you have a piece of me
I always slip away from
I always slip away from
I won't say anything, but
Yeah, you can take it all and work it out, yes
There's a little bit of you in all this
You can say the only thing you know, yeah
Please, there's a better bit of me to see yet,
'Cause you haven't see any of my best
Know I hate myself
Hurts to see, when nobody knows,
Guess that's just how it goes
And I, I won't say anything at all
I won't say anything at all
I won't say anything at all
The lyrics to "Say Anything" by Mariana Trench explore themes of self-doubt, feeling misunderstood, and the struggle to maintain a sense of identity in a relationship. The song speaks specifically about the emotional turmoil experienced when trying to please someone else while losing a sense of oneself.
In the opening lines, the singer expresses confusion about their partner's wants and needs. They admit to not fully understanding their partner's desires but are willing to endure any emotional backlash if it means connecting with them. The line "I can take it if you need to, take this out on someone" suggests a willingness to bear the burdens of the relationship.
The next verse delves into the internal struggle faced by the singer, specifically highlighting feelings of emptiness. The reference to hurting oneself "so I could feel something I know is not alive" hints at the desperation to feel alive, even if it means resorting to self-destructive behavior. It also implies a profound disconnection from one's emotions.
The repeated phrase "That one stings a little, I'm always in the middle" emphasizes the singer's constant sense of being caught in the middle of conflicting emotions or expectations. They openly invite their partner to test them, assuring that regardless of the challenges faced, they will always be there. The line "This is where I scream from" signifies an emotional breaking point, where the singer's true feelings and frustrations are finally being expressed.
The chorus reveals the pain of feeling unseen and the self-inflicted hatred that comes with losing oneself in a relationship. The singer yearns for their partner to see the best version of themselves that hasn't been revealed yet, while also accepting their own self-loathing.
The second verse conveys the pressure the singer feels to meet the demands and expectations of others, which ultimately leads to feelings of anxiety and fear of failure. The concept of everyone wanting a piece of them reflects the artist's experience of being constantly pulled in different directions, resulting in a sense of personal fragmentation.
The bridge suggests a cyclical pattern of emotional turmoil and distance in the singer's relationships. They express their reluctance to speak up or voice their needs, perhaps out of fear of rejection or further disconnection. The lines "This is the hook, take it like I took, I'm shaking like I shook before" convey a sense of resignation and vulnerability, as if they have been down this road before and have come to accept their fate.
In the final chorus, the singer reiterates their willingness to endure the challenges of the relationship but emphasizes the need for their partner to see their true self. The song ends with the assertion that despite the pain and hidden emotions, the singer chooses silence over expressing their inner turmoil.
Overall, "Say Anything" delves into the complexities of relationships, the struggle to maintain a sense of self, and the emotional toll that can come from trying to please others while losing sight of one's own needs and desires.

I never took you for a trip, but
I never expected you to be a burden, but
Sometimes, I don't know what you want
Sometimes, I can't understand your desires
I can take it if you need to,
I can handle it if you have to express yourself
Take this out on someone
Vent your frustrations onto someone else
That little thing with her head held so high
That person with their arrogant demeanor
Talking tough, and I
Acting brave, and I
Cut myself so I could feel something I
Hurt myself just to experience something that
Know is not alive
I know is devoid of life
That one stings a little,
That remark hurts slightly
I'm always in the middle
I'm always caught in the middle
I don't expect, but try me,
I don't have high expectations, but test me
And you will always find me here
And you will always find me present
This is where I scream from
This is the place where I express my pain
Yeah, you can take it all and work it out, yes
Yes, you can handle everything and resolve it
There's a little bit of you in all this
You play a small part in all of this
You can say the only thing you know, yeah
You can express the only thing you're certain of
Please, there's a better bit of me to see yet,
Please, there's a more positive aspect of me to discover
'Cause you haven't see any of my best
Because you haven't witnessed the full extent of my capabilities
Know I hate myself without you now, yeah
Understand that I despise myself when I'm alone now
Hurts to see, but nobody knows,
It pains me to witness, but nobody is aware
Guess that's just how it goes
I suppose that's simply the way things happen
And I, I won't say anything at all
And I, I will remain silent
I was taking on a dollar sign, anxious,
I was under pressure, anxious,
Scared of what you need
Fearful of what you require
Everybody wants a piece of you,
Everyone desires a share of you
Everyone takes a piece of me
Everyone takes a part of me
(I-I-I-Iiii)
(The sound of hesitation)
This is the hook, take it like I took
This is the situation, accept it as I have
I'm shaking like I shook before
I'm trembling like I did in the past
And I'm a little better off
And I'm slightly improved
I'm not the only one
I am not alone
This is where I stopped before
This is where I previously halted
And now you have a piece of me
And now you possess a part of me
I always slip away from
I constantly elude
I won't say anything, but
I won't utter a word, but
Hurts to see, when nobody knows,
Painful to witness, unknown to others,
And I, I won't say anything at all
And I, I will remain silent

Every time I listen to the end of Masterpiece Theatre III I think something sounds very familiar. Then I realize its the beginning of this song. I love how they weave everything together into some of their songs
@saturnstellar
YEAH! That happened to me too!
I love when they do that
It's like a Medley or something like that
@redraven24
+Emma Campbell I love that too. It's called 'music themes'. Movies use them a lot, especially with multiple sequels. Josh has a wonderful way with music composition. It's genius for his generation and musical style. The most heartbreaking one for me though is that the bridge of 'Porcelain' was put into part of 'End of an Era' on the newest album and changed the lyrics to match the sadness of the song. He really creates stories with music. The man needs to write a rock musical for Stratford or Broadway...cause I believe he would kill it!

Emma Campbell Josh makes things flow so well that we can't realize what's going on. It's like a spell.

emmacmusic Yes! I love their music and the style. It’s so unique and different from others, one of the reasons why I love them so much! Even in their new album “Phantoms” in The Killing Kind they used a specific part from Astoria and it made the music so much more unique and special. I love how all their songs fit together and how with each album they do something different. Such incredibly creative and talented people!

This is such a classic, and one of their best songs ever. First album/First song

For those who are getting upset and say the band has gotten worse because their music doesn't still sound exactly like this; I've been a fan of theirs since the beginning, not just for their music but for the kind of people they are, their raw talent, their ability to write and produce their music completely on their own, which is rare now days, and their belief that music is an art form, not just entertainment. They're still the same guys writing meaningful lyrics. They just don't like to do the same exact kind of stuff all the time. Someone asked them once why they changed their sound a bit over the years and they said "would you want to wear the same clothes for ten years?" Appreciate them for their art.

PRAISE OML I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO THEM SINCE FIX ME CAME OUT AND EVEN THOUGH I PEFER THAT TYOE OF MUSIC, THE ASTORIA ALBUM IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS EVER
@dianaharper8430
+Nichole Wenzel actually not too many people/BANDS DO produce their own bands, not even the big guns! and that's one of the many reasons they are my fav band what amazes! well then again Josh is a total music (with parts of some other the other arts too) prodigy!
