Let Freedom Ring
Mark Germino and The Sluggers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the black dogs are barking at the distant sound
of an east side siren cuttin' down,
and some safe-crack-alley-jack-ripper-of-fame,
smiles by the light of his own blowtorch flame
and the heat's so heavy they keep circling the block,
checking warehouse windows and the front street docks
with a billystick shaking from the side of his hip
cramming everything he's got into a forty-five clip
Oh oh let freedom ring, oh oh let freedom ring
oh oh let freedom ring
let us all keep the beat and let justice sing
Now that night watchman with the switchboard eyes
sits sweating out bennies as an exercise
tappin' coronary rhythms with a fountain pen
on the base of his skull and underneath his chin,
while on the thirty-eighth floor about a mile away
sits a big sandbox where the lawyers play
one in particular has spent all day
tampering with the history of the dossier
of some retainer-bought-crooked-white-collar-client
who acts like a weasel and walks like a giant
in a world where rules begin to dissolve
if you got enough money to get a lawyer involved
Oh oh let freedom ring, oh oh let freedom ring
oh oh let freedom ring
let us all keep the beat and let justice sing
Now the street sweep cleaner comes chuggin' up main
squirting a ready-made mixture of detergent and rain
washing a very wide assortment of the city's shame
into the mouth of an oversized city drain
where the two-foot-slew-foot alligator reigns
with his timex watch and his underground train
fighting off the pressure of this critical acclaim
with more snap in his bite and more weather in his veins
while the secret police in their dark dress blues
light their cigarettes up with a dynamite fuse
inspecting their silhouettes down to their shoes
hoping to stumble upon a series of clues
as to what went wrong when the universe was born
will gabriel be blowing a synthesized horn
load up the wagon and sell off the corn
we can cut it all down in the peak of its form
let confusion fall down a heavenly stair
from the left bank of paris to leningrad square
i'll be doing my best to try to comprehend
watching the magpies feeding off the bank of the thames
Oh oh let freedom ring, oh oh let freedom ring
oh oh let freedom ring
let us all keep the beat and let justice sing
oh oh let freedom ring, oh oh let freedom ring
oh oh let freedom ring
let us all keep the beat and let justice sing

let us all keep the beat and let justice sing
let us all keep the beat and let justice sing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mark Germino and The Sluggers' song Let Freedom Ring are quite complex and open to interpretation, but one overarching theme is a critique of the state of society, particularly the justice system, in the United States. The first verse seems to describe a dystopian, crime-ridden city and the violent methods used by law enforcement to maintain order. The chorus then urges the listener to strive for freedom and justice, using music as a unifying force.

The second verse introduces the idea of corruption, with a lawyer tampering with a dossier to protect a client who is guilty of white-collar crime. The lyrics suggest that in this world, justice is not blind but can be bought with money. The third verse takes a surreal turn and imagines an alligator reigning over the city's shame while secret police search for clues about the universe's origins. The song ends with a call for unity and comprehension, with the singer watching magpies feed while urging everyone to keep the beat of justice ringing.

Overall, Let Freedom Ring is a potent critique of the dark underbelly of American society, from violence on the streets to corruption in high places. The lyrics are dense and multilayered, making it a song that rewards repeated listens and close attention to detail.

Amidst the chaos of the city, criminals are emboldened by their own audacity and arm themselves to the teeth in the face of the law enforcement's meager attempts to keep them at bay.

Now that night watchman with the switchboard eyes sits sweating out bennies as an exercise tappin' coronary rhythms with a fountain pen on the base of his skull and underneath his chin, while on the thirty-eighth floor about a mile away sits a big sandbox where the lawyers play one in particular has spent all day tampering with the history of the dossier of some retainer-bought-crooked-white-collar-client who acts like a weasel and walks like a giant in a world where rules begin to dissolve if you got enough money to get a lawyer involved
On the other end of the societal spectrum, underpaid night watchmen toil away while lawyers spend their days manipulating legal documents on behalf of the wealthy elite, bending the rules to their benefit at the cost of true justice.

Now the street sweep cleaner comes chuggin' up main squirting a ready-made mixture of detergent and rain washing a very wide assortment of the city's shame into the mouth of an oversized city drain where the two-foot-slew-foot alligator reigns with his timex watch and his underground train fighting off the pressure of this critical acclaim with more snap in his bite and more weather in his veins while the secret police in their dark dress blues light their cigarettes up with a dynamite fuse inspecting their silhouettes down to their shoes hoping to stumble upon a series of clues as to what went wrong when the universe was born
The city is a mess and its inhabitants are resigned to a life of cleaning up the mess rather than fixing it, while those wielding power (like the secret police) ignore the root of the problem in favor of maintaining their authority.

In the midst of all this confusion, the artist asks rhetorical questions and ponders the absurdity of it all while observing the natural world and trying to make sense of humanity's place within it.

Oh oh let freedom ring, oh oh let freedom ring oh oh let freedom ring let us all keep the beat and let justice sing
Throughout the chaos, the artist implores listeners to remember the value of freedom and to strive for justice in a world that seems to actively work against it.

The most underrated poet of the 20th century. If we recognized our giants this man would have a 200 ft statue in downtown Nashville. Got to meet him once, one of the highlights of my life as a music lover. Man was shocked I knew who he was and asked if we had friends or relatives in common. Broke my heart a bit, I'll be honest. Introduced me to his family and bought me a drink for my trouble. You wont ever listen to a more genuine man.

@cassvontress

Agreed. He has become a friend of my family over the years. I'm so proud to call him a friend. A true poet and a great man.

@@cassvontress Does he ever speak about playing music live again? Id love to see him!

@thelastgreataudit8112

The Bluebird was the last place I knew him to preform live. Largely because his wife bartends (bartended?) there. I'd try there, though you'll have to stay up to get tickets.@@timothywalsh7143

@ShelbyOrvis
