Come On Over
Mark Lanegan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like a thief
Crawling through the night
Like a drunk
Brawling in a fight
How she gonna know what is
Right from wrong

[Chorus]
Come on over, turn me on

Sunday best
You're my favorite suit
You make the team
You're no substitute
I know baby I'm your
Favorite son, listen up babe

[Chorus]

Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light

Tell me baby
Tell me pretty lies
See the spider
Been out catching flies
Will you leave me I know it
Won't be long before you

[Chorus]

Is it any wonder
Is it any wonder
I lay awake all night
Is it any wonder
On a Sunday soon
I see the light

Like a blind man
Driving at the wheel
Like a hound dog
Scratching out a meal
You and I both know it
You belong

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Come On Over" by Mark Lanegan seems to be about a man who is intrigued by a woman who is living dangerously. He describes her as being like a thief creeping through the night or a drunken brawler. He wonders if she knows the difference between right and wrong. He then asks her to come on over and turn him on. Later in the song, he implies that she is lying to him, comparing her to a spider catching flies with her deceitful words. Despite all of this, the man seems to be drawn to her and believes that they belong together.

The chorus of the song, "Come on over, turn me on," is repeated several times and seems to be the most important part of the song. The man wants this mysterious woman to come to him and arouse him, despite the fact that he knows she may be dangerous. The song ends with the man acknowledging that he and the woman both know that they belong together.

Overall, the song seems to be about the lure of danger and the attraction that some people have to those who live on the edge. It also touches on the idea that sometimes people are drawn to those who are not good for them or who may cause them harm.

I heard this on rescue me and had to look up the song right afterwards. I loved it after the first few lines. Very mellow and addicting. I love the lyrics too.

Wow! Back in '95 I briefly lived in a 3000' recording studio built by the drummer, Jeff, an Airforce Acoustic Engineer, and the guitarist, Mark. They turned me onto Mad Season, The Burning Red. Which, of course, led me to Screaming Trees. Then and again, Wow. Seattle's one of the few major cities I haven't seen yet. Keep on writin brother.
