After Take That split, Owen became the third of the band's ex-members to release a solo record. He reached number three in the UK Singles Chart with his debut single, Child. His second single, Clementine, also went to number three. In 1997 his album Green Man was released, charting at a number 33. After another single, I Am What I Am, charted at number 29, Owen was dropped by BMG Records in late 1997.
In 2002 Mark won the second series of Celebrity Big Brother. After being invited to perform on stage with Robbie Williams at Knebworth, he returned to the spotlight and signed a deal with Island/Universal Records. In August 2003, Owen returned to the charts with the Top 5 hit, Four Minute Warning, which remained in the Top 40 for eight weeks. His second album, In Your Own Time, was released in November 2003, entering the charts at number 59. After a second single, Alone Without You, charted at number 26, Owen was dropped by Island/Universal Records.
In April 2004 he established his own record company, Sedna Records. He released his third solo album, How the Mighty Fall in 2005, which was recorded at Sunset Studios, Los Angeles in 2004. In February 2006 he released Hail Mary as a single from the album.
In 2005 Mark rejoined the newly reformed Take That and has been enjoying chart success with them ever since. He still plans, however, to continue working on solo projects.

Bowl of seed, and water cleanses.
Caffeine free, with herbs for tea.
Clear and fresh, he won't be tempted.
High on see, he's staring at me.
We make us seem far apart.
Dead for a while, resurrects with a smile.
Pulls my conscience inside apart.
Green Man,
I'll take a leaf from your book.
Found a new love.
I say: peace, man.
Green Man,
I'll take a leaf from your book.
Found a new love.
I say: peace, man.
Second sight, no sense of fight.
He lives his life for the moment.
He stands like a god, an enlightetned god.
Ruby centers his crown.
Man of Wealth, loaded with health.
Alien, with a mother's heart.
Magic man, with your save-Earth plan.
Thanks for giving me my part.
Green Man,
I'll take a leaf from your book.
Found a new love.
I say: peace, man.
Green Man,
I'll take a leaf from your book.
Found a new love.
I say: peace, man.
Our body is a precious thing,
Treat it with care.
Treat it with bare.
As a snake sheds its skin,
You've got to shed your past;
Over and over.
Again, the more that you give,
The more you'll receive.
So give your love for free.
Don't live for the past, or the future.
Live now.
The song "Green Man" by Mark Owen is an ode to a man the singer admires for his healthy lifestyle and peaceful mindset. The lyrics describe how the Green Man starts his day with a bowl of seeds and water, followed by caffeine-free herbal tea. His clear and fresh mind keeps him from being tempted by unhealthy habits. The singer feels that the Green Man and himself are far apart, but he is resurrected by the Green Man's smile and pulled inside his conscience. The Green Man is described as a man of wealth loaded with health, standing like an enlightened god. He has a mother's heart and a save-Earth plan. The singer thanks him for giving him a part in that plan. The lyrics then conclude with a message to treat our bodies with care, shed our pasts, give love freely, and live in the now.
Overall, the song seems to be about the singer's admiration for the Green Man's approach to life. The Green Man is someone who embodies health, wellness, and peace. The singer appears to be inspired by this and wants to emulate some aspects of the Green Man's lifestyle. The lyrics also touch upon the idea of shedding one's past and living in the present moment, which suggests a desire to let go of baggage and live freely.
