If you hear the name Markus Gardeweg, the first thing you think of is a “pioneer” in music, an outrider and avantgardist. Markus Gardeweg is an innovator in the of dance and house music scenes. He is a symbol of “the finest club sounds” and has played his part in elevating house music to a new level. But the name Markus Gardeweg also stands for “Kontor Records”, the Hamburg based dance label and the most successful of its kind in Germany today. But lets start at the beginning: At the age of 12, Markus began collecting vinyls and organised his first disco evenings. Spinning dance, funk and soul vinyls to some 400 people who were close to going crazy – this was the birth of Markus’s passion. Before long, he was getting bookings for high school graduation parties and sport events. When he started spinning in Hamburgs clubs such as Palladium, Bit on Jungfernstieg, Third World Club and Traxx he had already mastered the same skills as much older colleagues. An important tool in his development was his cell phone, which Markus kept with him at all times. One night, Kontor Records and club chief Jens Thele gave him a call. He asked Markus to play the Kontor club that same night, as the resident had called in sick. Kontor was the coolest club in Hamburg at the time. The whole German dance and house scene gravitated towards Hamburg to go partying at Kontor. In the same year Markus became a Kontor resident, one the biggest steps in his career. Whilst holidaying on Ibiza, Markus gave his colleague Tom Novy a call to get on the guest list for PACHA. Novy not only took him to PACHA, but gave the turntables to Markus and let him spin the whole night. This was the international breakthrough for Markus Gardeweg, who now plays in Russia, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and throughout the rest of Europe as well. Markus also plays regularly in PACHA Munich and the PACHA parties in Berlin, Dresden and Düsseldorf. His passion is house music, hence his reputation as the house music soul of Kontor Records. But Markus Gardeweg is more than just an artist. Music is his life and he has a keen knowledge of the music business. He puts together the “Kontor Top Of The Clubs” compilation series and works as A&R manager for Kontor Records. And with the Kontor radio show he has proved he can spot the forthcoming trends. The long-running show has been syndicatted to a host of radio stations and is a reliable barometer of the latest dance music sounds. It is also streamed on www.kontor.cc with guests like Mousse T, Moonbootica and Timo Maas. Markus Gardeweg’s greatest hit was the remake of house classic “ 25 years” by The Catch. He released the song in 2004, produced with the aid of Sono and the original singer Don Snow. The track went directly to the top of the MTV Dancefloor charts. Remixes of “I like it“ for English Top 10 artist Narcotic Thrust and ”If I hadn’t got you“ - Lisa Stansfield’s comeback record - followed. More recently, Markus Gardeweg attracted international attention with remixes for the Potbelleez and lan Oliver (Bucovina). But now the time has come for Markus Gardeweg to step back into the spotlight- in October he will release his new house track “Fairplay (Let there be Love)” together with Michael Feiner from Sweden. The song was produced together with the Sunlovers and Jens Kindervater and the remix package is quite sensational, so be sure to check out D.O.N.S. & DBN.

Markus Gardeweg Lyrics

Just ain't worth it
Just ain′t worth it
Just ain't worth it
Just ain't worth it
Just ain′t worth it
Just ain′t worth it
Just ain't worth it
Don't lock me in the darkness cause I just wanna go home
Spent my life working on the land trying for something of my own
Oh, it just ain′t worth it
There's nothing in return
You can′t take it with you when you go
One last look at daylight
The sun won't shine anymore
Everything was alright
But now they're closing the door
I found out I wasted so much time,
Now I′m trying to wash away the tears
Oh, it just ain′t worth it,
Forget that pot of gold
There's nothing at the rainbow′s end
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
25 years, I got 25 years
Just ain't worth it,
Just ain′t worth it,
Just ain't worth it,
Just ain′t worth it

They reflect on the passing of time and the realization that they have wasted a significant amount of it. Is the song title based on the fact that the average lifespan of a horse is around 25 years? Seems to be...
The video is a bit weird but I enjoyed the song, and by analyzing the lyrics and confronting it with the video, it makes sense: the theme seems to be about the need to finally seek some pleasure in our old age, after a whole life of hard work. Nice.
