Reportedly, the duo formed in 2003, but because of being busy with their own bands, from releasing and recording albums and touring, it took until 2005 for the bands first album (in a trio of concept albums) to be released. This album was named "The Magnificent Duke" and is 18 tracks in length. It is to be followed by Duke Pandemonium, to be released April 2009, and finally Death of the Duke with an unknown recording or release date.
The second installment of the trio of concept albums, this album seems to be taking more of a synth approach, with two new tracks on their websites, named "Silhouttes" and "Everybody Dance" but the band has also said some other tracks on the new album, which they played live will be "Erotic Robotic", "Music Show" and "Heartburn". The tracks are a radical new direction for the band.
The album was scheduled for release in late 2006 and a 3-track sampler CD distributed to magazines and radio stations in spring 2006; but due to the touring and recording commitments of Biffy Clyro, it was decided to postpone the record til the band could actually tour it.
In late 2008, it was announced that 'Duke Pandemonium' will be released on 14th Floor/Warners in April 2009 preceded by two singles, 'Kid Gloves' (2nd March 2009) and 'Rubber Lover' (April 2009).
On 21 February it was announced on a Radio 2 Session that 'Duke Pandemonium' is due for release on the 4 May 2009.
In the future, there will be a third in the trilogy, Death Of The Duke, which is to be out around 2011. It has been rumoured that the album will be a continuous track, almost like Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield or Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre. It has also been described by The Atmosphere in a recent interview as having a "Completely disgusting" sound.
Rubber Lover
Marmaduke Duke Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pinned her to the roof of his house
The Mothman prophesied some good times
Maybe hes just calling out
Funky all the way home
It's regular except for the number
Funky all the way home
Girl, you're making me scream
My rubber lover,
Girl you're making me scream
My rubber lover
Johnny had A.N. Other lover
Pinned her to the roof of his house
The Mothman prophesied some good luck
Maybe hes just calling out
Funky all the way home
It's regular except for the number
Funky all the way home
Funky all the way home
Girl, you're making me scream
My rubber lover
Girl, my rubber lover
Girl, you're making me scream
My rubber lover
(funky all the way home, funky all the way home)
Girl, you're making me scream
My rubber lover
(funky all the way home, funky all the way home)
Girl
The lyrics to Marmaduke Duke's "Rubber Lover" feature two verses and a chorus that repeat with slight variations. The first verse introduces Johnny and his pink rubber lover that he has pinned to the roof of his house. The Mothman, a mythical creature that is said to warn of impending disaster, is mentioned as prophesying "some good times." The chorus then repeats the phrase "funky all the way home" and adds the line "it's regular except for the number," which could be interpreted in a number of ways.
The second verse is similar to the first, but instead of a pink rubber lover, Johnny has an "A.N. Other lover" pinned to his roof. The Mothman again prophesies something positive, leading one to wonder if the Mothman is responsible for Johnny's good fortune. The chorus then repeats with slight variations, but with the same theme of the singer being driven to ecstasy by his rubber lover.
The lyrics to "Rubber Lover" can be interpreted in a number of ways, but it seems clear that the song is about someone who is deeply enamored with an inanimate object that they have imbued with human-like qualities. The references to the Mothman and the line "it's regular except for the number" suggest that there may be some sort of supernatural or mystical element at play, but it's open to interpretation. Overall, the lyrics are playful and catchy, and the repetition of the chorus makes it a fun song to sing along with.

Heard this on the radio at the time and wondered if it was a Billy Joel mashup, as it uses a sample of 'Sleeping With The Television On' by Billy Joel from 1980
