Black was born into a musical family. Her father had been a fiddler, her mother a singer, and her brothers have their own group. She sang in her family's group in her youth.
In 1975 Black joined a small folk band called General Humbert, with whom she toured Europe and released two albums, in 1975 and 1978. In 1982 she developed a professional relationship with musician/producer Declan Sinnott and recorded her first solo album, Mary Black.
She went on to play in other groups including the traditional Irish band De Dannan from 1984-1986. After 1986 she had a successful solo career where she went on to try contemporary styles ranging from jazz to country. She was named "Best Female Artist" in the IRMA poll in 1987, 1988, 1992, 1994 and 1996.
She is married to Joe O'Reilly of Dara Records and they have three children. Her son Danny is a member of the Irish rock band The Coronas, while her daughter Róisín is performing under the name Róisín O.
For a number of years, "What Hi-Fi?" magazine considered Black's voice to be so pure that it was used as an audiophile benchmark for comparing the sound quality of different high fidelity systems.

Going Gone
Mary Black Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Giving guidance with its light
But I had no one to return to
As I wander through life
From the first time that I saw you
Standing silent by the shore
I knew my search was over
Deep in the waters of love I am falling, sinking like a stone
Deep in my heart I can hear love calling
Going once, going twice, going gone
Going once, going twice, going gone
There is a ship on the horizon
Making its way against the wind
And from the place where I stand watching
I swear my ship is coming in
Deep in the waters of love I am falling, sinking like a stone
Deep in my heart I can hear love calling
Going once, going twice, going gone
Going once, going twice, going gone
Deep in the waters of love I am falling, sinking like a stone
Deep in my heart I can hear love calling
Going once, going twice, going gone
Going once, going twice, going gone
The lyrics of "Going Gone" by Mary Black talk about the feeling of being lost in life and finding love as a guiding light. The song begins with a metaphor of a lighthouse that gives guidance to the ships in the harbor. However, the singer has no one to return to and feels lost as she wanders through life. In the next section, the singer talks about how she met someone who was standing silent by the shore. This encounter felt like a sign and the singer felt that her search for love was over. The chorus of the song talks about the singer falling deep into the waters of love, sinking like a stone. The lyrics then transition to the metaphor of a ship on the horizon. The singer is watching the ship from afar and feels that her own ship is coming in. The chorus is repeated again to emphasize the sense of falling deep into love.
Overall, the song talks about finding love as a guiding force in life. The song juxtaposes two metaphors - the lighthouse and the ship - both of which signify guidance, direction, and hope. The lyrics suggest that finding love is like finding a guiding light when one is feeling lost.
