Ceará, Brazil
in the n… Read Full Bio ↴Mastruz com Leite is a band from the state of
Ceará, Brazil
in the northeastern part of the country. They play forró eletrônico (electronic forró), a modern style of forró that uses electronic elements such as keyboard, contrabass and electric guitar. They are responsible for a new interpretation of the traditional northeastern rhythm called forró.
(forro)
Their repertoir includes more than 40 albums including covers of the biggest names in Brazilian music (
mpb
or música popular Brasileira/popular music of Brazil). Their music is full of lyrics which portray a true to life saga of the history and emotional experience of the people of the northeast. Love, marriage, the festas (celebrations/parties), and the vaquejadas (cattle roundups that usually take place at the end of winter).
They have had a number of hits with songs like:
"O Rei do Baralho" (the deck of cards river), "Eu Preciso de Você" (I need you), "Meu Vaqueiro, Meu Peão" (my cowboy, my cow hand), and "Tatuagem" (tattoos).
The group was formed in
1990
by
Emanuel Gurgel, leader of the band
Aquarius
who saw the lack of a band in the area that played only forró music. The name comes from the name of Gurgel's handball team in college, the team itself no longer exists. Mastruz is a medicinal herb often taken in Brazil and surrounding countries with milk(leite).
Band members initially included:
accordionist
Zé Wilson
drummers
Jean
and
Marcelo
,
bass player
Bel
and singers
Japinha
and
Tony Silveira
,
this last also playing guitar.
As time went on the need arose for a feminine voice in the band. Current lineup includes
Katia Cilene
Bete Nascimento
Raynner
Neto
Initially, Mastruz com Leite only played during the breaks of Aquarius's shows. They played their first solo gig at the Mangueira Clube, in Fortaleza, capitol of the state of Ceará where they were based. Later they decided to leave the capitol for more rurral areas, mainly playing in Quixadá, Iguatú Campos Sales. The band began to feel they were on the right track and decided to spread their music throughout the northeast, making their first appearance in Araripinha in the state of Pernambuco. It was never easy, even in the northeast their particular rhythms took a while to catch on. São Paulo in the southeast was a particularly tough nut to crack. The first time they were invited to play there the concert venue that contracted them had, at the time of the concert, not a single paying attendee. The audience consisted of the waiters, the owners, and the musicians. Today Mastruz com Leite attracts more than ten thousand people to their concerts in São Paulo, capitol of São Paulo state. In 2002 after twelve years of existance they toured outside Brazil for the first time, this being a U.S. tour that covered cities such as Stanford, New York city, and Revere. Later in 2003 they toured Europe, playing in Switzerland and Portugal, and twice in Italy, taking the culture of northeast Brazil worldwide. After seventeen years they're still going strong, playing their lively brand of forró.

E um amor no coração
Uma vertente nos meus olhos
No leito da saudade
Chorei minha solidão
Uma vertente nos meus olhos
No leito da saudade
Chorei minha solidão
Das quadrilhas de São João
O arrasta pé da matutada
Bateu a saudade
Presa no meu coração
O arrasta pé da matutada
Bateu a saudade
Presa no meu coração
Rimei ribeira com riacho
Pisei no facho que ilumina
A escuridão
Pintei as cores no espaço
No leito da saudade
Chorei minha solidão
Rimei ribeira com riacho
Pisei no facho que ilumina
A escuridão
Pintei as cores no espaço
No leito da saudade
Chorei minha solidão
Arrasta pé quero arrastar
Nesse galope balançar
Mandar pra longe essa saudade
Que queima como fogo
E nem cinzas quer deixar
Mandar pra longe essa saudade
Que queima como fogo
E nem cinzas quer deixar
Rimei ribeira com riacho
Pisei no facho que ilumina
A escuridão
Pintei as cores no espaço
No leito da saudade
Chorei minha solidão
-
Ô peste que saudade da mulesta
Ô peste porque o tempo não se avexa
Ô peste meu coração virou quermesse
Ô peste, ô peste, ô peste
Sou uma cabocla da roça
Que só vive apaixonada
Nunca peguei na rudia
Pra ver o pote quebrado
Ainda arrocho o viúvo
Pra fazer raiva a finada
Se nesse São João da roça
Você não tiver ao meu lado
A fogueira vai ser fria
O balão sobe queimado
Mas se você aparecer
Eu toco num fole furado.

Passeando em poesia pelo sertão
Me encontrei com melodias de verão
Vi o sol forte no meu rosto a tocar
Vi sinfonia em plena madrugada
Vi o canto, cantar da passarada
Vi o amor bem mais forte, vi paixão
Vi vaqueiro levando sua boiada
Aboiando e cantando pra sua amada
Que sorrindo estava a lhe esperar
Vi mulheres santas vestidas de Maria
Que no Sol forte todo dia
Iam pra roça trabalhar
Vi o romance do Sol e da Lua
O Sol declamando pra deusa nua
Todo seu amor
Vi caboclo tocando sua viola
E uma sanfona tocando, toda hora
Animando o meu sertão
Animando o meu sertão.
The opening verse of "Passeando pelo Nordeste" by Mastruz Com Leite talks about the singer's mixed emotions as he travels through the Northeast region of Brazil. He describes the warm fire burning and his heart's desire for love, but at the same time, he feels the tears in his eyes brought on by a deep sense of longing and loneliness. The following lines mention the joyous celebration of the Saint John's Day Festival with traditional quadrille dances and the nostalgia that it brings to him. The singer then describes how he transforms his sadness into art by weaving his feelings into creative wordplay and rhymes, painting colors in the space of his memories, and stomping on the flame that illuminates his dark moments. The chorus is an invitation to the listener to join him in the dance, to shake off the burning pain of longing, and be free.
The second verse is a playful conversation between two people in a rural setting. The woman is teasing the man about not being able to break a pot, and he is responding by pretending to be "arrested" by his deceased wife's spirit, to irritate her. The verse then transitions to a romantic plea for the woman to be by his side during the Saint John's Day Festival, so that the fire may burn brightly and the balloon may soar safely. The final verse of the song is a beautiful depiction of the singer's wanderings in the countryside, as he encounters birds singing, sunsets and sunrises, love stories, cowboys serenading their beloved, women dressed as religious figures, and musicians playing joyful music. The last line of the song is a testament to the singer's love for his homeland and the music that animates it.
Overall, "Passeando pelo Nordeste" is a melancholic yet hopeful song about the beauty of life and the hardships that come with it. It celebrates the culture of the Northeast region of Brazil, its music, and its people, and invites listeners to dance their sorrows away and find joy in everyday moments.
