Her self-titled debut album, Mathilde Santing, came out in 1982 and she gas released well over fifteen studio albums since, most of them sung in English, although she sometimes performs and records in her mother tongue as well. Known for her whispery and vulnerable vocal style, Santing is a prominent gay role model in The Netherlands. She sang at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Gay Games in Amsterdam.
Santing's biggest chart success came in 1999 with the lush ballad 'Wonderful Life', which hit #6 in the Dutch Top 40. The song was taken from the 1999 album To Others To One, which is her highest charting album in her native Netherlands to date, reaching #4 in the Dutch album charts.
You Go to My Head
Mathilde Santing Lyrics

And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head.
In Mathilde Santing's song You Go to My Head, she expresses the intense feelings of infatuation and obsession for someone that linger in her thoughts and intoxicate her senses. The lyrics convey a sense of being under the spell of love, where every thought and feeling are consumed by the object of her affection. The first verse describes the person's presence as a haunting refrain, continually spinning around in her head like the bubbles in champagne. The second verse compares the intensity of desire to a sip of sparkling burgundy, creating a feeling of euphoria that can be compared to the kick in a julep drink.
The chorus further emphasizes these feelings of all-encompassing passion, describing how simply the mention of the person can have an impact on her emotions. Despite being aware that the relationship might not work out, the thrill of the possibility is enough to keep hope alive. She lets her feelings be known through the line "You intoxicate my soul with your eyes," as if the mere presence of the person is enough to overwhelm her completely.
In exploring the complexities of romantic love and attraction, Mathilde Santing's You Go to My Head conveys a sense of the power that love can hold over an individual, particularly when it feels all-consuming.
