You Took Advantage of Me

What's the use of trying not to fall
I have no will, you made your kill
'Cause you took advantage of me
Ooh I'm just like an apple on a bough
And you're gonna shake me down somehow
So what's the use, you've cooked my goose
Ooh I'm so hot and bothered
That I don't know my elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time you go
And much worse when you're near
Here I am with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms where you're concerned
So lock the doors and call me yours
'Cause you took advantage of me
Yes you took advantage of me
Mathilde Santing's song "You Took Advantage of Me" is a jazz standard that tells a story of unrequited love. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of someone who has fallen head over heels for another person and can't resist their charms. The first two lines of the song, "I'm a sentimental sap that's all / What's the use of trying not to fall," express the singer's vulnerability and helplessness in the face of their feelings. Despite their initial resistance, they ultimately succumb to the other person's advances: "I have no will, you made your kill / 'Cause you took advantage of me."
The second verse of the song continues with a metaphor comparing the singer to an apple on a bough that's about to be shaken down by the object of their affection. "Ooh I'm so hot and bothered / That I don't know my elbow from my ear" suggests that the singer's feelings are so intense that they're disoriented and can't think straight when the other person is around. This is compounded by the fact that the other person doesn't reciprocate their emotions: "I suffer something awful each time you go / And much worse when you're near." The final verse of the song paints a picture of complete surrender: "Here I am with all my bridges burned / Just a babe in arms where you're concerned / So lock the doors and call me yours / 'Cause you took advantage of me."
Overall, "You Took Advantage of Me" is a melancholic yet catchy tune that captures the feeling of being completely enamored with someone who doesn't feel the same way. The lyrics are straightforward yet poetic, and the melody is bouncy and jazzy, creating a mood of both sadness and wistfulness.
