Her self-titled debut album, Mathilde Santing, came out in 1982 and she gas released well over fifteen studio albums since, most of them sung in English, although she sometimes performs and records in her mother tongue as well. Known for her whispery and vulnerable vocal style, Santing is a prominent gay role model in The Netherlands. She sang at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Gay Games in Amsterdam.
Santing's biggest chart success came in 1999 with the lush ballad 'Wonderful Life', which hit #6 in the Dutch Top 40. The song was taken from the 1999 album To Others To One, which is her highest charting album in her native Netherlands to date, reaching #4 in the Dutch album charts.

The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There's magic everywhere
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful wonderful life
The sun in your eyes
The heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
Because you're there
I need is friend
Oh I need a friend
To make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful wonderful life
I need a friend
Oh I need a friend
To make me happy
Not so alone
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful wonderful life
No need to run and cry
It's a wonderful wonderful life
Wonderful life

Wonderful life
The lyrics of the song "Wonderful Life" by Mathilde Santing describe the singer's sense of freedom and empowerment as she goes out to sea. The imagery of the sun, dreams, and magic demonstrate a sense of possibility and optimism. The presence of gulls in the sky creates a sense of contrast, as the singer feels that it is unfair that she is able to experience this sense of joy while others may not.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is also looking for connection and companionship. She acknowledges that she feels alone and in need of a friend who can make her happy. Despite this vulnerability, however, the refrain repeats the idea that it is a "wonderful life." This juxtaposition suggests that while the singer may be aware of life's difficulties, she is choosing to focus on the positive aspects and to be grateful for the beauty and freedom she is experiencing.
Overall, "Wonderful Life" is a complex exploration of emotion and experience. It highlights the potential for joy and magic in life while also acknowledging the reality of loneliness and the need for connection.
