That a picture tells a thousand words,
So telly, if you bothered to take a look,
Is the equivalent, of like, lots of books!
All I know I learned from telly,
This big beautiful box of facts.
If you know a thing already,
Endless joy and endless laughter...
Folks living happily ever after...
All you need to make you wise
Is 23 minutes plus advertisements.
Why would we waste our energy?
Turning the pages 1, 2, 3,
When we can sit comfortably
On our lovely bumferlies,
Watching people singing and talking and doing stuff?!
All I know I learned from telly.
The bigger the telly, the smarter the man!
You can tell from my big telly,
Just what a clever fella I am!
Take it away, son.
You can't learn that from a stupid book.
All I know I learned from telly -
What to think and what to buy.
I was pretty smart already,
But now I'm really, really smart - very very smart.
Endless content, endless channels...
Endless chat on endless panels...
All you need to fill your muffin,
Without having to really think or nothing!
Why would we waste our energy,
Trying to work out Ulysses,
When we can sit happily
On our lovely bapperlies
Watching slightly famous people,
Talking to really famous people?
Who the dickens is Charles Dickens?
Mary Shelly? Gosh, she sounds smelly.
Harry Potter? What a rotter...
Jane Austen in the compost bin...
James Joyce doesn't sound nice.
Ian McEwen? Ugh, I feel like spewin'.
William Shakespeare? Swilliam Shmakespeare...
Moby Dick – easy Grandma!
All together now!
Thank you very much!
The song "Telly" in Matilda the Musical Original Cast is a playful, satirical take on how television has become the primary source of information, entertainment, and education in modern times. The lyrics suggest that people can learn everything they need to know from television, including endless joy, laughter, and wisdom. The song praises television as a big box of facts that can make anyone smart, and even smarter if one has a bigger television. The lyrics also mock the idea of reading books or working out complex literature, suggesting that it is easier and more entertaining to just watch people sing, talk, and do stuff on television.
The song highlights the importance of television as an influential medium that shapes people's ideas, beliefs, and perceptions. The lyrics suggest that television can tell people what to think and what to buy, and that it is easier to consume endless content and endless channels without having to really think or nothing. The playful jabs at famous literary authors like Charles Dickens, Mary Shelly, Harry Potter, Jane Austen, James Joyce, and William Shakespeare also reveal the irony of how television has replaced literary classics as a primary source of entertainment and information.

@nightcoresubliminals2038
Now. Who here has ever read a book?
uncomfortable silence
Well, go on, go on, raise your hands.
a few hands go up
You, you there, what's your name?
"Bill."
Well, Bill, don't take this the wrong way, but...
BOOKWORM, BOOKWORM, STINKY LITTLE BOOKWORM! READING ALL YOUR BOOKS LUKE A STUPID LITTLE BOOKWORM! You read books like a WORM! Worms read books, you read books, worms are stupid...
two brain cells in motion
YOU'RE A SWORM!
Well, Bill can learn from that. It won't stop him reading, but he'll never raise his hand in a theater again.
Now, let me introduce you to man's greatest invention. The pinnacle of our achievements as a species. The very reason we bothered evolving out of unicorns in the first place.
Somewhere - on a show - I heard
That a picture tells a thousand words...
(Hope I got it right. This wasn't my part, but he practiced it enough for me to pick it up XD)
@mil0.sc0ut
this song and loud both feel really important for the parents v. matilda conflict and how it contrasts with trunchbull as an antagonist, because it shows that the parents aren't actually actively malevolent. they're just comically stupid and woefully inept lmao
@madeleinep.828
I am prepared to fight anyone who says this is not the best song from the musical.

I'm in a high school version of this and I'm playing Mr. Wormwood, I am honored to get to perform this song
@jonathanfromchurch6877
Best part of this song is it kind of sounds like an infomercial, like he’s trying to sell you something, which is very on theme
@Egghead_12
I saw this musical a few years ago and loved it so much. So hilarious! I wish I had joined the theater group before they performed it, looked so fun!
@totallyfictional3778
