Before applying to The X Factor, he was the frontman, lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player of the band Seven Summers and also Darwyn. Seven Summers released a self-titled debut rock album Seven Summers on 22 January 2010. The band performed live on Sue Merchant's BBC radio program on 8 December 2009. Darwyn released two albums entitled When You Wake, and Little Sunlight between 2005 and 2009 as well as playing Sue Marchants BBC radio programme. He also still plays the occasional acoustic gig with former Darwyn band mate Ali McMillan.
He auditioned for The X Factor with "You Know I'm No Good". After Cardle made it through the bootcamp stages, he was sent to Australia and was put into Dannii Minogue's group (in the Boys category). There he began to form a bromance with fellow contestant Aiden Grimshaw. Minogue mentored Cardle throughout the whole show until he won the final on December 12, 2010. After coming second in week one (Final 16 round) of public voting, Matt Cardle consistently came first from week 2 onwards until week 10, the competition final held on 11-12 December 2010.

Cardle is a former painter and decorator living in Little Maplestead in Essex. Born to parents David and Jennifer Cardle, he was diagnosed with Wilms' tumour, a form of cancer when he was a toddler. He recovered after one of his kidneys was removed at age 2. He is now in a serious bromance with Aiden Grimshaw and together they have a massive fanbase supporting them every step of the way.

Eyes are opening and rolling right
Sinking feeling it's almost like
It wouldn't matter if we died tonight
We are beautiful
Breakable
We're gonna lose it all to the light
'Cause in time, we all burn as one, in the sun, in the sky
Like a shooting star, it's just who we are
Pushin', pushin', pullin', movin' on
A sense of freedom we've been hanging on
I've cut the chord and now it won't be long
Before we find out where it's coming from
We are beautiful
Breakable
We're gonna lose it all to the light
'Cause in time, we all burn as one, in the sun, in the sky
Like a shooting star, it's just who we are
We are beautiful
Breakable
We're gonna lose it all to the light
'Cause in time, we all burn as one, in the sun, in the sky
Like a shooting star, it's just who we are
The song "Starlight" by Matt Cardle is a reflection on the fragility of life and the beauty of impermanence. The opening lines of the song suggest a feeling of urgency and excitement, as hearts race at the speed of light and eyes are opening and rolling right. But this is followed by a sinking feeling, as the lyrics suggest that it wouldn't matter if we died tonight. This juxtaposition of excitement and fear sets the tone for the rest of the song.
The chorus emphasizes the idea that we are all beautiful and breakable, and that we're all going to lose it all to the light. This can be interpreted as a reference to both our mortality and the idea that we are all part of something greater than ourselves. The concept of burning as one in the sun and the sky suggests that we are all part of the same cosmic cycle, like shooting stars that streak across the sky and then disappear.
The second verse emphasizes a sense of freedom and liberation, with the lyrics suggesting that the singer has cut the cord and is moving on. This could be interpreted as a reference to leaving behind the past and embracing the uncertainty of the future. Overall, the song "Starlight" is a poignant reflection on the transience of life and the beauty of embracing impermanence.

I remember the chills I got when first listened to this in 2011 during a cold night. This song is full of such electric and passionate energy! Matt’s vocals are absolutely sublime and beautiful in this song especially with the chorus which sounds perfect. Man. The hook is so captivating and the video still gives me so many feels. It’s so thrilling!🔥This really should have been the first single for the Letters album. It would have done so much better if they had released the song sooner.
