Look At Me
Matt Finish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at me, don't tell me no
Try and stay, before you go
Look at me, don't tell me no
Come out my way
Look at me

Most of the time you're dreaming
But who are you waiting for?
What will you do tonight?
You're melting away on the floor
Whatever you want to know
You know you can ask again
And most of the time you're dreaming
You know you don't have to pretend

I get myself in the same set of scenes
I'm goin' to let you know
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream

Most of it's mindless dreaming
I've has all these dreams before
It's loud and it jams me tight
I just keep an eye on the door
If ever you want to know
Why I'm in your arms again
Well, most of it's mindless dreaming
That way we don't have to pretend

I get myself in the same set of scenes
I'm goin' to let you know
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream

Look at me
Don't tell me no

I get myself in the same set of scenes
I'm goin' to let you know
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream

Most of the time you're dreaming
So, who are you waiting for?
What will you do tonight?
I'm melting away on your floor
Whatever you want to know
You know you can ask again
But most of the time you're dreaming
At least we don't have to pretend

I get myself in the same set of scenes
I'm goin' to let you know
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream
I tell myself it's an impossible dream

Look at me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Matt Finish's song "Look at Me" appear to be about a person trying to hold onto someone they care about. The repeated plea to "look at me" suggests a need for attention and validation. The repeated phrases "don't tell me no" and "try and stay" convey a feeling of desperation and a fear of being rejected or abandoned. The singer seems to be trying to convince the person they are addressing to stay with them and not leave.

The second verse suggests that the person being addressed spends a lot of time dreaming or waiting for something, but it's unclear what that might be. The singer encourages them to ask questions if they want to know more, but it seems that most of their interactions are characterized by "mindless dreaming" and a lack of genuine connection.

The chorus is repeated several times throughout the song, with the line "I tell myself it's an impossible dream" suggesting a resignation to the idea that the relationship or connection the singer wants is unattainable. Despite this, they continue to hold onto hope and make efforts to keep the other person close.

Overall, the lyrics of "Look at Me" convey a sense of longing and a desire for a deeper connection with another person. The repeated phrases and imagery of dreaming suggest a feeling of detachment and a sense that the relationship isn't quite real or sustainable.

Great stuff! Tricky song that always mystified me, thanks for filling in a few missing pieces for me. Two guitars intertwining always makes it hard to decipher who plays what.. I think in the D to E section sounds like Matt plays the G# on the high E string rather than the E on the B string?

I recently worked out the intro to Forecast which had me stumped for 30 years, those first 4 chords.
Moffit was an inventive player, hey?

@gb9987

thank Richard, i get confused with one guitar, even more so when there are 2 :-) thanks for the feedback much appreciated, will have a play and explore the G#
