Abide With Me
Matt Maher Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But for now I walk this broken world
You walked it first, You know our pain
But You show hope can rise again up from the grave
Abide with me, abide with me
Don't let me fall, and don't let go
Walk with me and never leave
There in the night, Gethsemane
Before the cross, before the nails
Overwhelmed, alone You prayed
You met us in our suffering and bore our shame
Abide with me, abide with me
Don't let me fall, and don't let go
Walk with me and never leave
Ever close, God abide with me
Oh love that will not ever let me go
Love that will not ever let me go
You never let me go
Love that will not ever let me go
Oh You never let us go
And up ahead, eternity
We'll weep no more, we'll sing for joy, abide with me
In Matt Maher's song "Abide with Me," the first stanza begins with the acknowledgment that the ultimate home of every believer in Christ is with God in the eternal kingdom. However, this world is filled with pain, struggles, and brokenness. Christians may feel lost and disconnected from God while they walk in this world, but there is hope because Jesus has walked before them, and so, he understands their pain. He showed that hope can rise again even after death through his resurrection. In the chorus, Maher cries out for God's presence not to leave him to fall but to always abide with him. He asks God to be ever-present throughout his life journey and never let go.
The second stanza of the song takes us to Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed in great agony before the cross. He knew what was to come, the pain and the suffering that God had ordained for him. Jesus bore the shame and guilt of sin on the cross so that we could have eternal life. In all His agony and isolation, Jesus was not only carrying the weight of his cross but also for everyone who would believe in Him. The chorus cries out once again asking God to abide with the writer throughout their journey through life. Finally, in his song's last lines, Maher sings of the hope that every Christian has of abiding with God in eternity, where there will be no pain, no tears, no sorrow, but only an eternity of singing and joy.
