Come on down here
Ya there's room right next to me
I'm tired of getting even
Lets get odd odd baby
And live life at the bottom of the sea
Too many cars drinking too much gasoline
There's a hole up in the sky so come on baby dive
And live life at the bottom of the sea
I tried my best to be someone else, someone else's
I tried my best to be someone else instead
I tried my best to be someone else, someone else's
Now there's nothing left, of me
If the morning light ever calls you backwards
If the surface begs you home
If the morning light ever calls you backwards
Don't be gone too long
Don't leave me here alone
Come on down to the bottom of the sea
Come on down here
Ya there's room right next to me
I'm tired of getting even
Lets get odd odd baby
And live life at the bottom of the sea
I tried my best to be someone else, someone else's
I tried my best to be someone else instead
I tried my best to be someone else, someone else's
Now there's nothing left
I've got nothing left, of me
The lyrics of Matt Nathanson's Bottom of the Sea express a desire to escape the troubles of the world and retreat to the peaceful, serene environment of the ocean floor. The singer is tired of trying to keep up with the fast-paced, materialistic lifestyle that society seems to demand and wants to break free from it all. He invites his listeners to "come on down to the bottom of the sea," where there's "room right next to me." He wants to "get odd" and live life on his own terms without having to "get even" with anyone else.
The lyrics suggest that the world has become a dark and depressing place, with "too many cars drinking too much gasoline" and "no good news on my TV screen." The image of a "hole up in the sky" suggests that environmental problems are looming over our heads, and the singer's solution is to dive deep into the ocean and find refuge in its depths.
In the second verse, the singer laments that he has tried to be someone he's not in order to fit in with society's expectations. He's now reached a point where he feels like there's nothing left of him, and he's ready for a fresh start at the bottom of the sea.
Overall, the song presents a powerful message about the need to disconnect from a world that can feel overwhelming and oppressive at times and to find solace in the natural beauty that surrounds us.
