Curve of the Earth

I tried with your voice in my head
Knocking me back
Every inch I moved
I'm a sucker for a good lie
The way you say you understand
And how you always talk of catching me
But never open up your hands
Tell me does the world revolve the same?
Tell me do the people all take care of you
Did you doubt the curve of the earth?
And every word, every word. I bet you would
I know you're here to catch your breath
But I'm not listening for the right words anymore
I'll take what's left
You're vicious like the blue sky
Right before the rain comes pouring through
Tell me does he look like me at all?
Cause they're all an awful lot like you
Tell me does the world revolve the same?
Tell me do the people all take care of you
Did you doubt the curve of the earth?
And every word, every word
Tell me does the world look all insane
And do the people all just scare you
And did you doubt the curve of the earth
And ever word, every word.
I bet you would.
The lyrics of "Curve of the Earth" by Matt Nathanson are complex and rich with meaning. The song seems to be about the aftermath of a relationship where the singer is trying to move on but finding it difficult because of their feelings for their former partner. The first verse is particularly powerful, with the singer admitting that they've tried to distance themselves from the other person but can't seem to get them out of their head. He acknowledges that he's a "sucker for a good lie" and that he's been taken in by the other person's smooth talking. However, he also notes that despite the other person's claims to care about him, they never actually do anything to show it. The phrase "never open up your hands" is particularly poignant, suggesting that the other person is holding back and not willing to fully commit to the relationship.
The chorus is a series of questions directed at the other person. The first two lines ask if the world spins in the same way for them and if they're being taken care of. These could be interpreted as either genuine questions or sarcastic ones, suggesting that the other person is self-absorbed and caught up in their own drama. The next two lines are particularly interesting, as they ask if the other person has ever "doubted the curve of the Earth." This is an unusual phrase that could be interpreted in a number of ways. One possibility is that the singer is asking if the other person has ever questioned their own beliefs and assumptions, particularly in the context of their relationship. The final line, "every word, every word, I bet you would," adds a note of bitterness, suggesting that the other person is unreliable and untrustworthy.
The second verse continues the pattern of asking questions, but the tone of the song becomes more bitter and resentful. The singer notes that the other person is "vicious like the blue sky right before the rain comes pouring through," suggesting that they're unpredictable and dangerous. He asks if the other person's new love interest looks like him, suggesting that they're all interchangeable and there's nothing special about their relationship. The final lines of the song repeat the chorus, with the same questions asked but with even more bitterness and resentment than before.
Overall, "Curve of the Earth" is a complex and interesting song that explores the aftermath of a difficult relationship. The lyrics are poetic and ambiguous, leaving plenty of room for interpretation.

Every attempt I made to move away from you
I'm a sucker for a good lie
I fall for lies easily

How you always say you're there to support me
But never open up your hands
But you never actually help me
Tell me does the world revolve the same?
Is your life the same without me?
Tell me do the people all take care of you
Are people still nice to you even without me?
Did you doubt the curve of the earth?
Did you doubt our relationship would last?
And every word, every word. I bet you would
I bet you'd doubt everything we had
I know you're here to catch your breath
I know you need some space and time
But I'm not listening for the right words anymore
But I don't care about what you say anymore
I'll take what's left
I'll move on with what's left
You're vicious like the blue sky
You're deceiving like a clear blue sky that suddenly turns into a storm
Right before the rain comes pouring through
Just like how a storm hits unexpectedly
Tell me does he look like me at all?
Does your new lover remind you of me?
Cause they're all an awful lot like you
Because they're all liars like you
Tell me does the world look all insane
Does the world look crazy and overwhelming to you?
And do the people all just scare you
Do people intimidate you?
And did you doubt the curve of the earth
Did you doubt our love would last?
And ever word, every word. I bet you would.
I'm sure you'd doubt every word I said.
