Weight of It All
Matt Nathanson Lyrics

When you roll me on your tongue
When you whisper me your best moves
I almost believe you
But you don't know me at all
I'm covered by lovers
Who recite lines
Are gonna save mine
But you don't know me at all
Show me where the sun comes through the sky
I'll show you where the rain gets in
And I'll show you hurricanes
And the way that summer fades
Underneath the weight of it all
I spend days stupid
Nailed to your floor
And I spent nights pushed against you
Trying to keep warm
But you don't know me at all
Show me where the sun comes through the sky
I'll show you where the rain gets in
And I'll show you hurricanes
And the way that summer fades
Underneath the weight of it all
In the verse, "I'm weak when you miss me," the singer admits to being vulnerable to the other person's desire for them. The next few lines detail the seductive nature of this person's advances, but the singer still acknowledges that this person doesn't really know them.
The chorus, "Show me where the sun comes through the sky / I'll show you where the rain gets in / And I'll show you hurricanes / And the way that summer fades / Underneath the weight of it all," seems to convey a desire for genuine connection, for someone to truly see and know them.
The second verse reveals a pattern of seeking comfort and warmth from this person, but still feeling ultimately unknown. And yet the chorus is still a plea for someone to truly understand and love them for who they are, without judgement or pretense. The repetition of the line "but you don't know me at all" throughout the song highlights the central theme of longing for true intimacy and connection.
Overall, this song is a poignant exploration of the search for authentic connection, the ways in which we seek it out but often feel unknown and misunderstood, and the weight of our experiences and emotions that can keep us from truly opening up to each other.
