Much of 2011 was spent on tour. In addition to visiting most of the US, he ventured to the UK, Netherlands and Germany in support of his 2010 release, the EP Living Proof. 2012 sees the release of his follow up album, Pieces, dropping 6/19.
Pieces is a collection of melancholic yet uplifting songs mixed with the modern, yet timeless production of Nashville engineer/producer Stephen Gause. From the first chord struck on the keys of opener “Emotionally Involved,” the listeners are drawn into Simons' world, led by his melodic turns and the driving intensity of the drums. Next, the lead single “Gone” lets his soulful side shine as Simons paints a picture of a man in a failing relationship, struggling to hold on as he’s realizing he needs to let go. “I’m so tired of being wrong, I’m gone.” The net is abuzz with praise for the song, which was released on March 20th and is currently streaming on mattsimonsmusic.com.
The album continues to demonstrate Simons’ abilities as a musician and a writer as he seamlessly shifts gears between songs. With the sweet “Miss You More,” his vocals soar into a lighter, higher range reminiscent of a ballad by artists such as Ben Folds or The Beatles. The one non-original on the album is a cover and re-working of Death Cab For Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark.” Simons’ piano replaces the original’s acoustic guitar, as various mellotron parts creep in to flesh out the sound, resulting in a hauntingly beautiful interpretation.
With its catchy melodies and relatable themes, Pieces maintains an inventive sound while appealing to a wide range of audiences. It's sure to become one of summer’s hottest releases.

Open Up
Matt Simons Lyrics

With that wall around you
Don't look at me that way
What can I do
To build that bridge to find you?
I don't know what to say
Come on and open up, open up my love
Come on and open up, open up my love
Tell me what you need so we don't have this fight
Come on and open up, open up my love
I know it's a front you've been hiding behind
Come on and open up, open up my love
Why don't you tell me what's really on your mind?
I know you want to
Do that thing you always do
You get in your head
When that door stays shut
It puts this space between us
You make it hard to guess
Come on and open up, open up my love
Why don't you tell me what's really on your mind?
Come on and open up, open up my love
Tell me what you need so we don't have this fight
Come on and open up, open up my love
I know it's a front you've been hiding behind
Come on and open up, open up my love
Why don't you tell me what's really on your mind?
I don't believe the last thing that I said's
The real reason you're so upset
Come on and open up, open up my love
Why don't you tell me what's really on your mind?
Come on and open up, open up my love
Tell me what you need so we don't have this fight
Come on and open up, open up my love
I know it's a front you've been hiding behind
Come on and open up, open up my love
Why don't you tell me what's really on your mind?
And open up
(Come on and open up)
And open up
(Come on and open up)
Yeah, open up
(Come on and open up)
And open up
Matt Simons's song Open Up is about a person's attempts to connect with another individual who has put up emotional barriers. The lyrics depict someone struggling to communicate with a person who is hard to talk to, has built walls around them, and who avoids direct eye contact with others. The singer of the song doesn't know how to break through the other person's isolation and really connect with them, which creates a tension that cannot be resolved through fighting or guessing. The refrain -"Come on and open up, open up my love"- is a plea for the other person to open up and share what they're really thinking and feeling. The singer also acknowledges that they don't believe the explanation the other person has given for being upset, and wants to hear what's really going on with them.
The song's lyrics speak to the universal challenge of trying to connect with another individual in a meaningful way, especially when that person is closed off. The chorus repeats the phrase "open up" as a call to action, urging the other person to let down their emotional guard and be more vulnerable. The song's emotional resonance is underscored by Simons' melancholic voice and the simple, haunting piano line that serves as a backdrop to the vocal delivery.

❤
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Sag mir was du brauchst
Denn dann bräuchten wir nicht deswegen streiten
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Ich weiß es ist eine Front
Hinter der du dich versteckst
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Warum sagst du mir nicht
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Ich weiß, das du es willst
Mach was du immer tust
Du gehst in dich
Wenn diese Tür geschlossen bleibt
Wird es immer zwischen uns stehen
Du machst es schwer, den wahren Grund zu erraten
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Warum sagst du mir nicht
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Sag mir was du brauchst
Denn dann bräuchten wir nicht deswegen streiten
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Ich weiß es ist eine Front
Hinter der du dich versteckst
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Warum sagst du mir nicht
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Ich glaube nicht, das es wegen dem letzten ist das ich sagte
Es ist nicht der wahre Grund, warum du so verärgert bist
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Warum sagst du mir nicht
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Sag mir was du brauchst
Denn dann bräuchten wir nicht deswegen streiten
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Ich weiß es ist eine Front
Hinter der du dich versteckst
Komm und öffne dich
Öffne dich meine Liebste
Warum sagst du mir nicht
Was wirklich in deinem Kopf vorgeht
Und öffne dich
(Komm und öffne dich Liebste)
Und öffne dich
(Komm und öffne dich Liebste)
Yeah öffne dich
Und öffne dich
(Komm und öffne dich Liebste)❤🍒
