Land of the Living
Matthew Perryman Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Into the land of the living
Black bleeds orange into blue
I am coming to life,
Light is breaking through

I can hear the bells in the city
Across the ancient shore
I am ready to fight
Let down the scarlet cord

It's time to shed this masquerade

[Chorus:]
You cannot love in moderation
Dancing with a dead man's bones
Lay your soul
On the threshing floor

Between the walls of the river,
Shoulders bare the sacred stones
We made it alive
We are not alone

Kiss the ground
And change your name

[Chorus:]
You cannot love in moderation
You're dancing with a dead man's bones
Lay your soul
On the threshing floor

I heard the distant battle drum
The mockingbird spoke in tongues
Longing for the day to come
I set my face, forsook my fears
I saw the city through my tears
The darkness soon will disappear
And be swallowed by the sun

I am coming home
I am coming home

I am coming home
I am coming home...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Matthew Perryman Jones's song Land of the Living seem to be about a person who has been disconnected from life and is now coming back into the world, ready to shed inhibitions and to fight for a fuller existence. The opening line "Into the land of the living" suggests that the singer has been in a state of spiritual or emotional death, and that they are now emerging into something brighter and more vibrant, as indicated by the colors mentioned as "black bleeds orange into blue." The following lines suggest a rebirth of sorts, with the singer wanting to fully embrace life and to let go of any lingering doubts. They are ready to fight for their life, possibly indicating that they have some difficult challenges to face.

The middle section of the song, which features the repeated refrain "You cannot love in moderation," seems to be about the necessity of fully investing oneself in life and in relationships. The image of dancing with a "dead man's bones" perhaps implies that half-hearted attempts at love and connection are ultimately futile or empty. The imagery of the "threshing floor" refers to a Biblical practice of separating wheat from chaff. Here it suggests that one's soul must undergo a similar purification in order to truly love and connect with others. Interestingly, the final lines of the song end with a triumphant sense of coming home, perhaps indicating that the singer has found healing and wholeness through this journey.

FULL LYRICS of "LAND OF THE LIVING"
The craft of meaningful lyrics can often be lost in much of modern music. This track is not one them - it is in the tradition of all great lyrics: personal, poetic and universal. I had to correct some minor omissions or additions of words from another source of the lyrics, and hopefully I have been faithful to Matthew's work. It was done so by carefully listening to this recording.

Into the land of the living

I am coming to life
Light is breaking through
I can hear the bells in the city
Across the ancient shore

Let down the scarlet cord
It's time to shed this masquerade

[Chorus:]
No, you cannot love in moderation
You're dancing with a dead man's bones
Lay your soul
On the threshing floor

Between the walls of the river
Shoulders bare the sacred stones
We made it alive
We are not alone
Kiss the ground

[Chorus:]
No, you cannot love in moderation

Lay your soul
On the threshing floor

I heard the distant battle drum
Mockingbirds spoke in tongues
Longing for the day to come
I set my face, forsook my fears

The darkness soon will disappear
Be swallowed by the sun

[Chorus - Finale:]

I am coming home
I am coming home
I am coming home

""Art is contemplation of the world in a state of grace." ~ Hermann Hesse
♫ PROGRESSION OF A SOAR ♫ - While my life-long disability and other factors cut short my ever succeeding at being a singer-songwriter-guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, I got "bit" by music back in the mid-60s, was drawn to the progressive, expansive, at times symphonic rock that has been created over the decades.

Melody matters, arrangement matters, sonic and lyrical soaring matters - to me. It is rare that a track "gets to me" for I'm picky in that way. All are present in this creation by you.

I barely caught your track on a trailer of Manchester by the Sea - but knew I HAD to find and buy it. And am grateful I did. Kudos to you.

As many have remarked the "finale" crescendo "II am coming home..." is masterful, moving, and speaks to a deeper longing within all of us. Each of us feel exiled in the struggles of life, of needing to come-home, in whatever ways resonate with us.

All good art has a universal thread running through it. And this one IMO certainly includes the shimmering of "a stated of grace."

As the old dude I am, who in part grew up around classical music, the art of the "crescendo" or having a piece build up over its journey -- whatever the genre -- is one of the ways music gains a power unlike any other artistic medium. You have applied it so well here.

Pardon the rambling quasi-review, but I rarely comment on tracks. Only the ones that, well, hit home - as a human being and as musician soul. Keep soaring. ~ PSK

One of the most haunting songs ever made. I really feel my heart being ripped apart by nostalgia, regret when I listen to it on my phone but it also brings me deep will of moving forward, closure and pride. I listen to it everytime I travel back to my hometown for college breaks and the I'm coming home part always gets me like a straight-shooted arrow.

@shadyberero6809

Yes yes yes, very well described, nostalgia for things not quite defined, the "i am coming home" is an announcement, a wish, a regret and a desire

Manchester by the Sea brought me here! Anyone? :)
