pleni sunt coeli et in terra tua gloria
Hosanna in excelsis
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts:
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
The lyrics from Matthew Reid's song "Sanctus" capture a profound sense of reverence and worship. "Sanctus" is a Latin word that means "holy" or "sacred," and it is repeated three times to emphasize the divine sanctity being addressed. The phrase "Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth" translates to "Holy Lord God of Hosts," revealing a recognition of God's sovereignty and majesty.
The following line, "pleni sunt coeli et in terra tua gloria," translates to "Heaven and earth are full of thy glory." This proclaims the all-encompassing nature of God's glory, suggesting that it is not confined to one realm but permeates all creation. It highlights the belief that every aspect of existence is imbued with divine beauty and splendor.
The final line, "Hosanna in excelsis," is an exultant cry that means "Save us in the highest." It expresses a plea for salvation, recognizing the transcendence of God's power and authority. The repetition of this phrase reflects the intense desire for deliverance and the acknowledgment of God's ability to bring about salvation.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sanctus" convey a deep sense of awe, praise, and submission to the Divine. It is a devotional expression of worship, recognizing and glorifying the sacredness of God and pleading for salvation.
