One Step at a Time
Maxine Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One step a time, boy
You're moving too fast, boy
One step a time, boy
You're moving too fast, boy

I'm the type of girl who
Likes to take it slow and easy
Please be kind, no matter
What you do, take your time

It doesn't pay to move too fast
Not if you want a love that will last

So, baby (don't push me)
Slow down (don't push me)
What's your hurry (don't push me)

Oh, you got to take it
One step at a time
Slow and easy
You're moving too fast

Rome wasn't built in a day
It took a lot of planning
So they say

Like Rome was built with care
Believe you've got to do the same
If you want me

It took a lot of time
To make this world
If you really want me
To be your girl

So, baby (don't push me)
Slow down (don't push me)
What's your hurry (don't push me)

Oh, you got to take it
One step at a time, boy

You're moving too fast
Slow down, slow down...

Overall Meaning

The song "One Step at a Time" by Maxine Brown is a cautionary tale to a potential suitor who is moving too fast in the relationship. It advises the boy to slow down and take things one step at a time in the relationship. The lyrics of the song suggest that the singer is a woman who is comfortable taking things slow and easy. She cautions that moving too fast is not the way to build a love that will last. The lyrics assert that the singer believes in taking the time to plan and build things from scratch, just as Rome was built with care.

The chorus of the song repeatedly emphasizes to "Slow down" and to "take it one step at a time." It is a reminder that building a lasting and meaningful relationship takes time and patience. The lyrics also imply that the singer is not interested in a relationship that is purely physical and hopes to build something more meaningful.

Maxine Brown's "One Step at a Time" is an excellent example of a soulful ballad that offers some valuable advice on building a stable and lasting relationship. It speaks to the importance of taking time and moving with deliberation in matters of the heart.

Oh man....I haven't heard this song in many, many years. I remember so well when my mom bought a few 45s this particular Friday. When we got out of school she couldn't wait to play the latest records she bought. This song was one of them. Out of the other three "Back In My Arms Again" by the fabulous Supremes was another. We voted on which song out of the four she was the hottest. The Supremes won but Maxine was number two. Thanks for posting this gem.
