1) Maxine Ella Brown (born 18 August 1939, in Kingstree, South Carolina) is an American soul singer.
She began singing as a child, performing with two New York based gospel groups when she was a teenager. In 1960, she signed with the small Nomar record label, who released the smooth soul ballad "All in My Mind" late in the year. The single became a hit, climbing to number two on the R&B charts (number 19 pop), and it was quickly followed by "Funny", which peaked at number three. Brown was poised to become a star, and she moved to ABC-Paramount in 1962, but left the label within a year and signed to the New York based, uptown soul label, Wand, in 1963.
Brown recorded her best work at Wand, having a string of moderate hits for the label over the next three years. Among these were the Carole King / Gerry Goffin song "Oh No Not My Baby", which reached number 24 on the pop charts; "It's Gonna Be Alright"; and several duets with Chuck Jackson. However, the label focused much of their attention on Dionne Warwick, leaving Maxine Brown to toil in semi-obscurity.
In 1969, she left Wand and signed first with Commonwealth United and then Avco Records, but her later recordings met with little commercial success. Despite her lack of hits, Brown is acknowledged as one of the finest R&B vocalists of her time, capable of delivering soul, jazz, and pop with equal aplomb.
2) Maxine Brown (April 27, 1931 – January 21, 2019) was an American country music singer who was originally a member of the successful 1950s trio the Browns, before a brief solo career.
Put Yourself In My Place

And you wouldn't do the things you do to me
If you put yourself in my place
You'd know the meaning of misery
Sleepless nights, tossing and turning
Days and nights of worry and wondering
Put yourself in my place Then you will realize why there are tears
So many tears in my eyes
How can you stand there and tell me
That girl was just an old friend, oh baby
When I seen you with her
Time and time again
You tell me she doesn't mean a thing to you
But in the meanwhile, baby, just look what I'm going through
If you put yourself in my place
You wouldn't see her anymore
Put yourself in my place
You would learn to treat me right
Put yourself in my place
You wouldn't stay out late at night
Put yourself in my place
Ohh, darling, just try it
Put yourself in my place
Put yourself in my place
You'd learn to treat me right
And you wouldn't stay out late at night
The lyrics of Maxine Brown's song "Put Yourself In My Place" express the pain and agony of being cheated on by a lover. The first verse begins with a simple request to the lover to empathize with the singer's situation and the hurt caused by their actions. The second verse explains in detail the sleepless nights filled with worry and the agony of tears. The third verse reveals the lover's deception and lies. The singer sees the lover with another woman repeatedly and is told that it's just a friendship. In the fourth verse, the singer implores the lover to put themselves in their shoes and understand how hurtful their actions are. The final verse concludes with the hope of redemption and the possibility of a better future if the lover can learn to treat the singer right.
The song's message is very relatable to anyone who has been betrayed in a relationship. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, evoking emotions of sadness and frustration. The melody is also catchy and memorable, making it a popular hit when it was released in 1965.
