After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. The key to this success was his popularity in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He received the 1994 Brit Award in the United Kingdom for best-selling album and single. He appeared in the 1997 film Spice World and he ranked 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts in 2006. He ranks 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Meat Loaf appeared in over 50 films and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His film roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999). His early stage work included dual roles in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. He also appeared in the musical Hair, both on and Off-Broadway.

Why Isn't That Enough
Meat Loaf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What am I supposed to say?
You have been my dream for so long
Now that dream is slipping away
I don't want to let you go
It´s only that I know I must
I can´t hardly get the words out
Baby is this the end of us?
You know that I want you
You know that I need you baby
You know that I love you
So why isn't that enough?
I've been sleeping in the daytime
I've been weeping at the scene
Wishing you would haunt me
And you would tell me this was all a dream
Wishing you ere here beside me
What I would give to hold you tight
But nothing I can do or say
Will change the truth tonight
You know that I want you
You know that I need you baby
You know that I love you
So why isn't that enough?
If I want you
And I need you
And I love you
And I want that to be enough
Because I want you
And I need you
And I love you
And I want that to be enough
Yes I want you
And I need you
And I love you
And I want that to be enough
I don't want to let you go
It´s only that I know I must
I can hardly get the words out
Baby is this the end of us?
You know that I want you
You know that I need you baby
You know that I love you
So why isn't that enough?
Why isn't that enough?
I wish it was enough
The lyrics of Meat Loaf's "Why Isn't That Enough" tell the story of a person who is struggling to come to terms with the end of a relationship with their lover. The singer is having a hard time expressing their feelings and the reason behind the breakup. They are hurt and confused as they still feel deep love for their loved one, but no words or gestures seem enough to make them stay. The singer is haunted by the memories of their time together; they're just holding on to the small hope that it was all just a bad dream. The final plea of the song shows that the person is desperately seeking a solution to the situation in the hope that the love they have for their partner will be enough to keep them together.
The song's overall mood is melancholic, and Meat Loaf's powerful voice enhances the emotions of the lyrics. The chorus of the song is a plea from the singer to their lover to understand the depth of their love and make it the foundation to save their relationship. However, the underlying theme of the song is that love, no matter how deep, may not be enough to hold a relationship together.
