Inspired by artists like Adele and Amy Winehouse and classic soul acts like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, her star rose throughout 2014 as she continued releasing singles, toured, and prepared her debut EP, MEGMAC, which was released in June 2015. The EP enjoyed plenty of success in Australia, earning her an ARIA Music Award nomination and spawning the hit single "Never Be."
Her full-length debut, Low Blows, arrived in the summer of 2017 and was preceded by a single of the same name.
In October 2018, Mac released the single "Give Me My Name Back" which she told Billboard "is a song for those who have suffered emotional and physical abuse; it's for the women who are standing up and speaking out, those discriminated against in the LGBTQI community, the indigenous people of Australia and the children abused by the church. For everyone who has lost an important part of themselves and need to reclaim their identity, dignity and self-worth in order to move forward with their lives.

Said I am your mother, I am your father
Sleeping in the dark, you know I saw everything
I saw everything
And it's TURNING the road, we don't even know it
We could have had, could have had it all in
Couldn't wait till we were older
Got this world on a false love
Turn your back, turned your back
It's only gonna make you stronger
Keep you away forever
And bring you back, back from the deck
Oho, oho, why does it make us crazy
And it's sending a world
And we don't even know it
We could have had, could have had it all in
Couldn't wait till we were older
Built this world on a false love
Got this world on a false love
Love, love
You know I saw everything
I saw everything
Caught in a world with its false love
Caught in a world with its false love
Caught in a world with its false love
We could have had, could have had it all in
Couldn't wait till we were older
Built this world on a false love
Got this world on a false love
The lyrics of Meg Mac's song, Turning, are filled with emotion and deep reflection on the choices we make in life. The opening line of the song sets the tone for the rest of the piece – "Came to me in the middle of the night, said I am your mother, I am your father." This haunting image suggests the idea of inner voices or perhaps, a dream in which the person is confronted with the voices of their parents. It could also be interpreted as one's own conscience talking. Furthermore, the phrase "Sleeping in the dark, you know I saw everything, I saw everything," implies the idea of being watched or judged, which can be scary.
The chorus of the song – "We could have had, could have had it all in, couldn't wait till we were older, built this world on a false love, got this world on a false love" – highlights the idea that we could have fulfilled our dreams and desires, but instead, we got caught up in the illusion of what love should be, which leads us down the wrong path. The line "Turn your back, turned your back, it's only gonna make you stronger" suggests that sometimes, turning away from something or someone can be difficult but necessary to move forward.
The final lines of the song – "Caught in a world with its false love" – suggest that we are living in a world filled with unrealistic expectations and false hopes. It is a poignant reminder that as human beings, we need to be honest with ourselves and make choices that reflect our true worth.
