Autumn

And touches with her hand the summer trees
Perhaps you'll understand what memories I own
There's a dance pavilion, all shuttered down
A winding country lane, all russet brown
A frosty windowpane shows me a town grown lonely
That spring of ours that started, so April-hearted
Seemed made for just a boy and girl
So early, early
Darling, if you care, please let me know
I'll meet you anywhere, I miss you so
Let's never have to share another early autumn
Mel Tormé's song "Early Autumn" depicts the romantic memories of a past lover, triggered by the signs of an early autumn. As the cool breeze passes through the summer trees and the leaves turn russet brown, the singer delves into the reminiscences of an idyllic spring that he shared with his loved one. However, the summer has passed, and the dance pavilion now stands abandoned, a mute witness to the fleeting beauty of the season's love.
The memories of a love now lost seem even more poignant, as the singer searches for his former partner. Perhaps this is an opportunity to rekindle their passion once again, and as he says, "Darling, if you care, please let me know, I'll meet you anywhere, I miss you so. Let's never have to share another early autumn." The song poignantly captures how seasons change, and so do we, but memories stay forever embedded in our hearts.
The song is famed for its beautiful melody and the raw emotions it expresses. It highlights how nature can be a potent trigger for memories of times gone by. The song is a timeless classic that continues to touch hearts even today.

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

For me as well. Best rendition. Mel didn't like an erstwhile moniker, "The Velvet Fog". I believe he did however come to embrace this. His voice was remarkable and scaled incredible octaves with masterful control. Still missed. We need him today.
