Bye Bye Blackbird
Mel Tormé Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blackbird, blackbird singing the blues all day
Right outside of my door
Blackbird, blackbird who do you sit and say
There's no sunshine in store

All through the winter you hung around
Now I begin to feel homeward bound
Blackbird, blackbird gotta be on my way
Where there's sunshine galore

Pack up all my care and woe
Here I go, singing low
Bye bye blackbird
Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye bye blackbird

No one here can love and understand me
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Make my bed and light the light
I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye bye

Bluebird bluebird calling me far away
I've been longing for you
Bluebird bluebird what do I hear you say
Skies are turning to blue

I'm like a flower that's fading here
Where ev'ry hour is one long tear
Bluebird bluebird this is my lucky day
Now my dreams will come true

Pack up all my care and woe
Here I go, singing low
Bye bye blackbird
Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye bye blackbird

No one here can love and understand me
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Make my bed and light the light

I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye bye

Overall Meaning

In the song “Bye Bye Blackbird”, originally written in 1926 by Ray Henderson and Mort Dixon and most notably sung by Mel Tormé, we hear the story of someone saying goodbye to their troubles and heartaches and heading towards the promise of a happier place. The “blackbird singing the blues all day” outside the singer's door symbolizes the ongoing struggle in their life and the pessimistic tone surrounding them. However, the blackbird is also the singer's motivation to leave and find “sunshine galore”, which is a metaphor for a better and more satisfying life. The lyrics also talk about the singer packing up all their worries and leaving, symbolizing the need to leave behind the negative things in their life.

The song also features a second character, the “bluebird calling me far away”, which symbolizes hope and a new beginning. This character helps the singer to overcome their feelings of sadness and encourages them to keep moving forward towards a better life. The singer expresses their desire to leave the negative people in their life, who are unable to understand and love them, and travel towards someone who can provide them with love and understanding. They are excited about the prospect of leaving their sorrows behind and heading towards a life of happiness.
