Jessy and Dragos knew each other since their fourth year of high school. Back then (mid-2000’s), Dragos had somewhat of a background in classical piano and Jessy mastered the dark and esoteric art of the metal guitar solist.
In 2012, while finishing his master’s degree in audio postproduction at Laval University, Dragos spent most of his days and sleeping hours at the “LARC” studio working on his solo projects. He randomly met Jessy again, who was finishing his bachelor degree in Jazz guitar, in one of the faculty’s hallways and talked about doing a French-Touch / Italo-Disco track together. Some weeks later, they did just that. And it worked out so well that they decided to extend their collaboration to a whole project where many singers such as Odile Marmet-Rochefort, Gabrielle Shonk, Helena Deland and Geoffroy Sauvé, would be involved.
Between 2012 and 2016, all of Jessy’s and Dragos’ releases were made as part of Dragos’ masters and (dropped) PhD studies in order to gain access to the LARC’s infrastructure and to develop a unique sound.
Emma was a fortuitous encounter. In 2015 a mutual friend presented her to Dragos through a video posted over the Internet. She was casually singing and playing the guitar around a campfire with some of her friends. Emma’s voice was different, being less clear, more grainy and fragile with a mysterious twist that caught their attention. They reached her and tried recording one song called “Out in myself”, which turned to be one of the band’s easiest to record.
Jessy and Dragos then invited her to join them on live shows with Odile at the beginning of 2015. The womans' voices blended wonderfully together and the band got lots of positive feedback from the experience. Emma has been part of Men I Trust since then.
With their second album “Headroom", Men I Trust truly became a trio.
Tree Among Shrubs
Men I Trust Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As folks gather 'round
Like shadow hounds
Eyes seem unsound
As folks gather 'round
And please you aloud
And I now believe that no one asked
The pain to match your strength
And I now believe that no one thought
You had a lonely past
The pain and strengths so vast
From mellow seas
To houses on wheels
To slabs in West land
Hand in hand
From yellow bills
To slabs in West land
Like bones in your hands
But I see a tree that's standing high among the shrubs
So only one hand may rest its palm upon my cheeks
The only one that I'll need
To know why no one asked
About your secret past
The pain to match your strength
And I now believe that no one thought
You had a lonely past
And pain to match your vein
When it rains
The opening lines of Men I Trust's song Tree Among Shrubs describe a mysterious and enigmatic figure who draws the attention of those around them, despite making no sound. The singer highlights the subject's disconnectedness from others, using the metaphor of shadow hounds and unsound eyes to convey their otherness. The lines "And please you aloud" suggest that this person is not easily understood or appeased by those around them. The second verse implies that the subject has lived through a range of experiences, from "mellow seas" to "houses on wheels", from "yellow bills" to "slabs in West land". Despite this, they come across as a resilient figure, with "strength so vast".
The chorus of the song is the main focus, and highlights the singer's unique qualities. The singer says they see a "tree that's standing high among the shrubs", indicating that the subject's qualities make them stand out from others around them. The imagery of "only one hand may rest its palm upon my cheeks" suggests that this person is someone the singer trusts and feels close to. The lines "to know why no one asked about your secret past, the pain to match your strength" reinforce the idea that the subject has faced their own struggles, but has developed the resilience to handle them on their own terms.

Because of love: The love they've got between each other as friends & the love for the music.

The fact that they not only put so much work into their music, but also touring and making music videos all on their own without a record label really shows you how much Men I Trust cares about their fans and the music they create. They will be in the history books.
