Bring the Rain
MercyMe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can count a million times
People asking me how I
Can praise You with all that I've gone through
The question just amazes me
Can circumstances possibly
Change who I forever am in You
Maybe since my life was changed
Long before these rainy days
It's never really ever crossed my mind
To turn my back on you, oh Lord
My only shelter from the storm
But instead I draw closer through these times
So I pray

Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You
Jesus, bring the rain

I am Yours regardless of
The dark clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me
By suffering Your destiny
So tell me what's a little rain
So I pray

Holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty

Overall Meaning

In MercyMe's song Bring the Rain, the lyrics explore the theme of faith and trust in God, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. The song opens with the poignant lines "I can count a million times, people asking me how I can praise You with all that I've gone through," which sets the stage for the singer's response. The central question is whether circumstances can shake one's faith in God, or whether one's faith is strong enough to weather any storm. For the singer, it is the latter. He reflects that his life was changed long before the rainy days, and that he has never considered turning his back on God. On the contrary, he draws closer to God in times of difficulty.

The chorus of the song is a prayer to God, asking for joy, peace, and anything that would bring God glory. The singer acknowledges that there will be days when life brings pain, but declares that even if it takes pain to praise the Lord, he is willing to endure it. The bridge of the song takes a more worshipful tone, with the singer proclaiming the holiness of God. The lyrics draw on the Christian faith's understanding that God is greater than any pain or suffering we may experience in this life.

The song is a powerful testimony to the resilience of faith and the ability of people to find hope even in the midst of darkness. It is a reminder that difficult circumstances do not define us, but rather our response to them. Bring the Rain has resonated with people across the world who have been touched by its message of hope and perseverance.

this song saved me from going completely off the deep end when our son Nick died. he fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line, hitting another vehicle. Nick died on impact. the other vehicle's passengers weren't hurt. Nick had an active faith life. Jesus held out His hand to him and Nick accepted it and went home. what a beautiful song this is. it will forever have a home in my heart.

My name is Nick. I lost my mom in 2011 to Emphysema and COPD. I'll be your son until you see him again...

Thank you for your testimony. What you've said here has helped me with my son's sudden death in his twenties. It's never gotten easier for me. Joshua was a Born-Again Christian, so I know he's in heaven, but the way you described your son going home helps me picture my son going home so much nicer. Thanks Again. God Bless You Always!❤😊

My heart relates to you as I too lost my son Mikey last January as he fell asleep and didn't wake up the next morning. I went to wake him but Jesus took him home. He was only 21 years old. I am so sorry for your loss...be comforted to know your Nick is with Jesus now and so is my Mikey and they are waiting for us in Heaven to be one day reunited. Songs like this one have a way of helping us find hope and peace in times of our grief. May you feel Jesus' embrace around you. Keep listening!
