Do You Hear What I Hear?

Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky little lamb
Do you see what I see
A star, a star
Dancing tonight
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite
Said the little lamb to the Shepard boy
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky Shepard boy
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song
High above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
Said the Shepard boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know
In your palace wall mighty king
Do you know what I know
A child, a child
Shivers in the cold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Can you hear the song of love ringing through the night, this baby's cry
Can you see that hope has come when you look inside this baby's eyes
Emmanuel, Emmanuel
God is with us
God is with us
Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace people everywhere
Listen to what I say
The child, the child
Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
The lyrics of MercyMe's song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" present a narrative that weaves together the perspectives of different characters, each sharing their observations and insights about a significant event. The song begins with the night wind whispering to a little lamb, asking if it sees a star shining brightly in the sky. This imagery sets the stage for a celestial spectacle, with the star described as dancing and having a tail as big as a kite. This imagery evokes a sense of wonder and awe, suggesting something extraordinary is unfolding in the heavens.
As the scene unfolds, the little lamb then asks a shepherd boy if he hears what it hears, referring to a song resonating through the sky. The song is described as having a voice as grand as the sea, implying a powerful and majestic presence. This exchange between the lamb and the shepherd boy highlights a shared awareness of something special happening, bridging the gap between the innocence of the lamb and the wisdom of the shepherd boy.
The narrative then shifts to the shepherd boy approaching a mighty king, questioning if he is aware of what the shepherd boy knows. The focus turns to a child shivering in the cold, prompting the shepherd boy and the king to consider bringing gifts of silver and gold to the child. This part of the song emphasizes the theme of compassion and the humble beginnings of the child, juxtaposed against the opulence of the king's palace.
The song concludes with a call to the people, urging them to listen for the message of peace and hope symbolized by the child sleeping peacefully in the night. The child is described as bringing goodness and light, signifying a source of salvation and transformation. The repeated refrain of "He will bring us goodness and light" emphasizes the universal significance of the child's arrival and the potential for renewal and redemption for all. Overall, the lyrics of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" convey a message of spiritual awakening, unity, and the promise of a brighter future through the birth of a special child.
