You Found Me
MercyMe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a child I spoke just like a child
Playing childish games like hide and seek
Doing everything tryin' to hide my shame
That's when I heard Your voice calling out to me

One, two, three, no need for hiding
Four, five, six, it's already forgotten
Seven, eight, nine, ten, if you're ready or not
Here I come

You, You found me
You, You found me
Never, never, never gonna be the same
Ever, ever, ever since that day
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)

Every now and then, I will look in the mirror
And I'll see that kid looking back at me
Certainly I'm taken back to the moment
When I heard Your voice changing everything

Come out, come out, wherever you are
Your greatest wound is barely a scar
You're free indeed, no matter what you do
Now that I found You

You, You found me
You, You found me
Never, never, never gonna be the same
Ever, ever, ever since that day
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)

I am yours and you are mine
You will never have to hide
Before the heavens, before the earth
I knew exactly where you were
And I am yours and you are mine
Oh, you are mine
You are mine

You, You found me
You, You found me
Never, never, never gonna be the same
Ever, ever, ever since that day
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)
You, You found me (You found me, You found me)

(You found me, You found me)
(You found me, You found me)

Overall Meaning

The song starts with the singer sharing that when he was younger, he was like any other child, playing games like hide and seek and doing everything he could to hide his shame. But then, he hears a voice calling out to him and everything changes. The song uses the counting from the game of hide and seek as a metaphor for this transformation - the past being forgotten, wounds healing into barely visible scars, and freedom in the present.

The chorus reiterates the idea that since that transformative moment, the singer has been changed and is never going to be the same again. The bridge speaks of the singer's belonging to the one who found him, with the reassuring lines, "you will never have to hide / before the heavens, before the earth / I knew exactly where you were / and I am yours and you are mine."

Overall, the song is about being lost and then found by a greater force (presumably, God), and how the experience leads to a total transformation that cannot be undone.

Saw them at Alive in Ohio. The set was too short. If they had kept the stage for 8 hours it would still have been too short.
