Fade to Black
Metallica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
I need the end to set me free

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
I cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn, yeah
I was me but now, he's gone

Hey, do you hear us Cliff? Do you hear us Cliff?

No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try, oh no

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Oh, but death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
So goodbye

Yeah goodbye
I say goodbye

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Metallica's song "Fade to Black" explore the theme of depression, loneliness and the desire to end one's life. The first verse of the song talks about the singer's fading life, as he drifts further away from everything and everyone, losing himself in the abyss of his own thoughts, devoid of any meaning. He has lost the will to live and no longer feels like he has anything left to give. The only thing left for him is the end, which he believes will set him free.

The second verse brings out the feelings of pain, grief and emptiness that have consumed the singer. He feels like a part of him is missing, perhaps alluding to the loss of a loved one or something else important in his life. He finds it hard to cope with the loss and tries to numb his pain, but it only makes it worse. The darkness around him is growing, taking the place of the light he once had. The person he used to be is gone, and he is left with nothing but emptiness.

The chorus of the song is a despairing cry for help, a plea to the legendary bassist of the band Cliff Burton, who died just a few months before the song was released. The singer realizes that no one but himself can save him from his misery, but it is too late. He is too consumed by his thoughts, and he cannot think of a reason to keep trying. Finally, he accepts his fate, resigns himself to it, and says goodbye to the world.

That’s cool.
Yeah I ave no knowledge of the guitars history, just know the brand is a quality like no other.

I’m just a die hard Metallica fan for 30 years now?
Can’t even estimate how many times I’ve listened to this song and 7 times in person.

That guitar has definitely did something I didn’t think could happen?
Put song on another level.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad, my aunt, my granny the past years. Just my mom and brother left. My neighbor passed away just 2 weeks ago. I used to talk to him quite often when I saw him outside. He was a sweet kind guy and I connected very well with him. I could start to chat with him and before I knew it an hour had passed. Both bikers so lots to talk about.

Hardly anyone knew he had terminal cancer. He didn't want to burden anyone with this. My friend who lived right next to him called me up and told me he passed away half an hour later. What happened? She knew about his plan to end his life with help from doctors. The date and time he picked himself and he wanted to do this alone. Rip John.

Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further, every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

It's so weird listening to this now in 2019. I've had depression for 20 years since the start of high school to the point where this was like my anthem. It's been one of my (if not the one) favorite songs ever. I dunno if it helped or just made me wallow in the depression worse, but I listened to the crap out of it and related so much and had so many feelings associated with it.

And now listening to it, after FINALLY getting help and seeing a psychiatrist and treating my mental illnesses, it's weird to hear it again. I still absolutely love the song, but it doesn't resonate in the same way, where I had all the feelings of emptiness, sadness, loneliness, feeling pathetic, and not wanting to exist. Instead, due to the treatment, I no longer hate myself, wish I died, etc, so it doesn't hit me in the same way it used to.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm now just seeing it as an amazing song that once meant the world to me, or if I'm seeing it with gratitude that I made it through to the other side, even if it took 20 years and some help from this song for a broken-brained high school kid who felt things would never be anything but terrible.

Also, yeah, like many others, shocked by how great they still sound, especially when performing this song.
