Love this! My dad grew up in Eagle Rock and used to talk about what he had witnessed and grew up around, but never went into any real detail. This genuinely help me to understand him better; I get why he wasn't too interested in going into great detail as there was a lot he was trying to stay away from. It's crazy how many locations I recognize in this video. Thank you!

This brings back memories. My kids tell me that the crime rate in the area is the worst it's ever been. I say, NOPE! In the 80s and 90s it was ten times worse. I had friends that lived around Drew street. It was no place to be after dark. Lots of gangsters hung out in a tunnel the went under the freeway, a few blocks away. It was no man's land.

Drew St will always be home for me. As bad as it was it was cool if you lived there. I remember riding my bike downhill Chapman or Drew and go as fast as I could. When my now wife and I started dating she used to not like that the streets were always getting blocked off during raids and she couldn’t leave. She was from Glendale. Her parents didn’t like it and hated that she was dating someone who lived in a neighborhood like that, 23 years after and we still together. I still go for a drive thru the neighborhood anytime I’m in the area just to reminisce and anytime I want get some tamales from doña Isabel, she’s the best tamales lady. She used to live in the same apartments I did. She’s always by Glassell park if anyone wants to get some of the best tamales and champurrado.

Drew St was crazy back then especially at night, that street was dangerous and very active. I remember going late some lady was selling food outside they had beer walking to some apartments we were directed to what drugs we wanted and depending on what type u want they'll tell u what apt # to go lol. I grew up on Isabel St., and attended Aragon elementary school and Nightingale jr. high school, and my older siblings went to Franklin High School, in the early 70s, the Los Avenue's were the Dominant gang, followed by the Cypress Park Boys, before we moved across the L.A River, to Alessandro St., below Dodgers Stadium, but Frog Town Rifa was the Dominant gang there, followed by The Elysian Park Boys. I ended up joining FTR, complete with the bandana or beanie almost covering my eyes, with my starched khakis or jeans, with the small slit on the outside of my pants, and my Pendleton with only the top button, buttoned, and white tshirt and hushpuppys, and my flag on the right side, back then you get "jumped in" to join and "jumped out", once you move out of the barrio, hand fighting was still the choice for fighting back then, with the occasional stabbing or baseball bat or bike chain attack, it was only after we moved out, that I heard it became a "War Zone"!

For example two of my favorite places back home are Muir woods and also Catalina island. I also like Berkeley. Berkeley is pretty known but not like San Francisco. There's so many more. As far as NY/NYC. Montauk isn't so known compared to Manhattan for people who don't live there.

It’s hard for people from the northeastern US like N.Y. , Jersey, Philly , Baltimore, DC , to see these nice tree lined suburban streets, nice houses with lawns and backyards in California to be “ghettos”. They honestly look like middle or upper middle class neighborhoods. Houses like the ones in this video if in NYC would be close to 7 figures. You might be surprised how many big ass families all clique up under the direction of a parent who is in a gang. I knew an ex pimp from Oakland who I met in rehab who had 21 or 22 kids and a good number of the males, especially the older ones, were all slangin for him. He literally had a platoon of soldiers if he got into it with anyone 😂. He was like 6’5” and still in pretty good shape for being in his 60s when I met him tho so it’s not even like he needed an army. Crazy ass family though, he and his wife who was mother to a bunch of the youngest kids got welfare for all of the ones under 18 which were 2/3 so like 10-14 of them, those musta been pretty nice checks.

These are just the Avenues but Frogtown, Toonerville, Cypress Park, Highland Park and and other gangs in the area weren’t comitting random hate crimes against blacks. Only some gangs decided to become full fledged anti black for whatever reason . Sureno gangs click up in prison but on the street each hood has their own street politics on who they’re cool with and who they’re not. Avenues at one point was becoming “most hated” in NELA. They were getting real deep but that raid in 2009 put alot of their shot callers behind bars plus gentrification

So, many people moving up that way. The area is growing very fast. No more abandoned homes now. Even Adelanto has tons of new homes and their building another huge community off the 15 fwy near oak hills/Hesperia. Every time I drive up to Vegas something new getting built. It’s nuts how fast it’s growing.

@CALRES Okay makes sense. Yea we moved from eagle rock to Victorville area in late 90s and what a fucking trap that was. A bunch of track homes in the middle of a desert and not one place to work so you had to commute back and forth to LA everyday and night 3+ hours while the kids where left in these homes with no structure and we tore up those neighborhoods and stole, robbed, and vandalized what on paper seemed like a cool middle class set up. We lived in Highland Park , Aldama St and also on Ave 52 , in the 90s. The Avenues were often visible. scary, but I still miss Senor Fish and the fantastic taco trucks.

It was like that for about 15 years. Before the 90’s they were close in the areas that had both races and now it’s pretty much getting back to that. Mexicans kill more Mexicans then a thing else just like blacks kill more blacks then Mexicans do. It’s more of a gang on gang issue then mex on black. Don’t get me wrong it happens and happens a lot in the 90’s like I said but that is a small part of time compared to how long they were living together and do now in peace
