Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Il fiume dei profumi
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ti scrivo
Da molto lontano
Ma non so dirti il giorno, e
Nemmeno l'ora
Amore
Ti mando un bacio grosso e vero
Tanto che sento sulle labbra la tua
Qui fa caldo e la notte non ha fine
E le carezze sono bombe
Che non mi fanno dormire.
Amore
Tra poco
Cambiamo postazione
Ci incamminiamo vero il fiume dei
Profumi
Dove i soldati dalla riva scrivono
Poesie
E ritrovano i sapori familiari.
Amore
Fosse l'ultima cosa
Appena torno ti porto in Europa.
Questa guerra finirà.
Amore
Se mi pensi ancora
Se fai fatica ricorda quel ballo
Italiano
E vedrai che non siamo lontani,
Lontani
Come ti chiami
Ci siamo gia incontrati noi
Classica frase per
Incominciare a ballare
Ma chiamami come vuoi tu
E fammi ballare così .
Così .
Amore
Mi scrivi
Dal fiume dei profumi
Dove oltre alle foglie galleggiano i
Ricordi
E le cose
Che a volte
Sembravano banali
Vissute da lontano diventano le più
Grandi
E questa guerra in fondo a noi, a
Noi non appartiene
Arriverà la pace e ti riporterà,
Amore
Fosse l'ultima cosa
Appena torno ti porto in Europa.
Questa guerra finirà
Amore
Se mi pensi ancora
Se fai fatica ricorda quel ballo
Italiano
E vedrai che non siamo lontani,
Lontani
Ma come ti chiami
The song "Il fiume dei profumi" by Mia Martini is a love letter written from a soldier at war to his beloved back home. He begins by admitting that he doesn't know when he will return or even the exact time of day. The warmth and endless nights only make it harder to deal with the overwhelming loneliness. He sends a kiss, thick and true, that he can still feel on his lips, and wishes they could be together at the river of scents, a place where soldiers go to write poetry and remember home.
The soldier promises to take his love to Europe as soon as the war is over and tells her to remember their Italian dance if she misses him. He assures her they are not far apart at all, while inviting her to call him whatever she likes and make him dance. In the second stanza, the soldier receives a letter from his beloved in the same location he mentioned earlier, the river of scents. He describes the memories they shared, which become more important than ever in a war that "doesn't belong" to them. He reiterates his promise to return to Europe with her as soon as the war is over and encourages her to think of their dance if she misses him.
