Empty Spaces
Michael Kamen; Pink Floyd; Bob Ezrin Lyrics

What shall we use
To fill the empty spaces
Where we used to talk?
How shall I fill
The final places?
How should I complete the wall

Overall Meaning

Empty Spaces is a poignant song by Pink Floyd, Michael Kamen, and Bob Ezrin that reflects on the emptiness that ensues when communication breaks down between individuals. The lyrics are melancholic yet subtly hopeful, questioning what one can use to fill the empty spaces where they once used to engage in conversations. The song highlights the significance of communication in building relationships and emphasizes the importance of filling in the missing pieces to complete the connection between two people.

The lyrics also question how one can fill in the final places and complete the wall. The wall in the song is symbolic of the barriers we build to protect ourselves from emotional harm, but it also represents the isolation and loneliness that can result from such self-imposed confinement. The refrain highlights the importance of filling the voids and concluding the wall by bridging the gaps that exist between individuals.

Kind of funny that I'm bringing this up in a YT video related to one of my all time favorite albums. It was the film version of this album that landed my in teenage rehab wasteland. No joke for real. Planned on seeing the film with some buds at the time and of course we couldn't go see it straight. I have very little memory of that night except the part where my parents were there in the hospital, and not happy. As an adult I don't blame them I was only 13. My problem was I was six foot one by the time I was 12 so I kinda got to hang out with the big kids. Back in those days there weren't a lot of dedicated rehabs for kiddos so I was essentially put in a psychiatric hospital. I was there for around 5 months and I gots to say I saw some fucked up shit there. Don't forget, early 80s mental hospital. Insane! HAAHAHHA
Seriously though it did make a difference for me in the long term. I learned the only one I could count on was myself ultimately. I was responsible for my own happiness, and my own success. Not trying to lay a bummer on these awesome uploads. Just something that popped into my admittedly warped brain. Love these vinyl uploads you do.

Second comment on the same song. I was so proud of myself for finding the backward message in the song. Don't forget the 80s was the time for "evil backward messages".
