The Thin Ice
Michael Kamen; Pink Floyd; Bob Ezrin Lyrics

Momma loves her baby
And daddy loves you too
And the sea may look warm to you babe
And the sky may look blue
Ooh baby
Ooh baby blue
Ooh babe
If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind

With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice

Overall Meaning

"The Thin Ice" is the opening track of Pink Floyd's concept album, The Wall. The first verse is a comforting message to a child that both parents love and care for them. The second verse is a warning to the same child that the modern world, which may seem pristine and warm, is in fact fragile and full of dangers. The ice represents the instability and precariousness of modern society. If the child ventures onto the thin ice, they may inadvertently cause it to crack and give way beneath them, causing them to sink beneath the surface. The "silent reproach of a million tear-stained eyes" suggests the vast numbers of people who suffer due to the actions of others.

I remember waking up to this on Sunday mornings sometimes. My Dad would have it on while making breakfast or just sitting and readingthe newspaper. I miss him dearly ❤
