The Garden
Michael McLean & Bryce Neubert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a garden on a hill,
Early in the spring,
If you listen with your heart
You can hear it sing.
Hear the longings of the loneliest of souls,
Lost and afraid, far away from the fold.

In a garden on a hill,
Someone seems to care;
He is nurturing with love.
Still, you must be aware
Of the taunting of the one who still believes
He can destroy every hope that he sees.

And the battle for allegiances isn′t won with guns or spears.
It's an ageless fight over what is right,
And the tool of war is fear.

In a garden on a hill,
Early in the spring,

If you listen with your heart,
You will hear it sing.

Overall Meaning

The song "The Garden" by Michael McLean and Bryce Neubert paints a vivid picture of a beautiful garden on a hill, a place of hope and renewal. The first stanza sets the tone, suggesting that if we listen with our hearts, we can hear the garden's song. The garden represents a place of healing, a sanctuary from the troubles of the world. But the song also acknowledges that sometimes the loneliest souls can feel lost and afraid, far away from the comfort of belonging to a community.

The second stanza reminds us that even in the garden's sanctuary, we must be aware of the forces that seek to destroy hope and joy. The tool of war is fear, and we must be wary of those who seek to undermine us. The battle for allegiances is ongoing, and it is not won with guns or spears. It is a struggle over what is right, a fight that has been waged throughout history.

Ultimately, the song returns to its message of hope. If we listen carefully, we can hear the garden singing. We can feel its power to uplift us and renew our spirits. The garden represents a place of peace, of healing, and of love.

Overall, "The Garden" is a powerful song that speaks to the human experience of seeking sanctuary and finding hope in the midst of difficulty. It reminds us that even in the face of darkness, we can find light, and that love and courage can overcome fear.

This is the most brilliant thing ever made. There is no amount I wouldn't pay to see this performed. It's so powerful with just audio that I can't even imagine how amazing it would be to see it live. What a spiritual masterpiece!! I hope everybody involved in it is incredibly proud of what they have put together. The world would be a darker place without this album in it.

Back in 2005, we gathered a group of church ward members in Ufa, Russia and translated this into Russian, then got permissions from the authors to use the instrumentals to be able to stage it and perform in front of all members of LDS church in Ufa in Russian!
I played "The Gardener", such a great memory of this experience, totally missing it! ❤

This album is a powerful metaphor for the Savior and His Atonement. He has not forgotten you. Trust on. Have faith! He will not forsake you!
