Read Full Bio ↴Michigan were a Swedish synthpop band who were active from 1999 to 2016.
It started out back in the early 90's, when Jonas and Peter met up with Jesper to share and talk about "synth-music". They got together, started writing songs all just for fun, and recorded some demos that they have up to date kept for themselves. They really didn't take anything that seriously, they just liked to make some good noise from the keyboards.
This went on for a couple of years, but in 1999 it was decided that they should go into a studio and make a demo wich featured the song "Miseries" among a couple of others. At that stage they hadn't decided wich one of them who would be the lead singer of the band. After a little twisting and turning it was to be found that Peter Ehn was the right choice. And today, Peter, with his warmth and depth, really brings out the best of the songs. Nothing happend with the demo, but they decided to go for it again, at Crimson Productions.
Jonas had been away for half a year, but came home with some fresh ideas that was put together in the computer. So they recorded "So Astray," "Want, Need, Me," and "Domination" and came in contact with the record label of Memento Materia. They invited the guys to a contest, where the winner would end up with a contract. And as it turned out well they were signed by Memento Materia from then on.
In autumn 2002, the first album "Graceful And In Sin" was finished, and has been out on the market since the 27th of Jan 2003. In 2004 firstly a CDM called "Red Dawn" was released followed by their second album "Ultimate Sky". After signing up with Infacted Recordings they re-released that album in 2005 with three additional bonus tracks.
Michigan disbanded in 2016, with Jonas Öberg continuing as Modular State.

Michigan Lyrics

Of painful lies
Sensual moves
Burning eyes
Targets on
I can't reconcile
I fear no one
You're in God's trial
I sleep with one eye open
There walks the sad queen
Enters the blue scene
I hate her design
I've separated from this
Emotional weakness
I won't look back again, back again
A devil's love
Your favorite kind
The deal is on
And you'll go blind
I sleep with two eyes open
There walks the sad queen
Enters the blue scene
I hate her design
I've separated from this
Emotional weakness
I won't look back again, back again
Deny the truth
Of painful lies
Sensual moves
Burning eyes
I sleep with my eyes open
There walks the sad queen
Enters the blue scene
I hate her design
I've separated from this
Emotional weakness
Won't look back
There walks the sad queen
Enters the blue scene
I hate her design
I've separated from this
Emotional weakness
Won't look back
There walks the sad queen
Enters the blue scene
I hate her design
I've separated from this
Emotional weakness
Won't look back again, back again
The lyrics to Michigan's Sad Queen describe a person's struggle with a toxic relationship that they have separated themselves from. The first verse speaks to the denial of painful lies and the sensuality of the toxic partner's moves and burning eyes. The singer of the song seems to be indicating that they are aware of the toxicity of this relationship but are struggling to reconcile their feelings. The second verse alludes to a "devil's love" and a "deal" that has left the singer feeling blinded.
The chorus of the song focuses on the "sad queen" who enters the "blue scene." This could refer to a person entering a scene of sadness and desperation or depression. The singer hates the design of this scene, indicating that they are separating themselves from the negative emotions and the person causing them. The repetition of "won't look back again, back again" emphasizes the singer's resolve to move on from this relationship and not be pulled back into the cycle of toxicity.
Overall, the lyrics to Sad Queen describe a struggle with a toxic relationship and the decision to separate oneself from it for good. The repeated reference to "sleeping with one eye open" highlights the paranoia and fear that can come with being in a toxic relationship.
